Humber Bridge path closed to cyclists 'indefinitely'

The Humber Bridge paths have been closed to cyclists and pedestrians 'indefinitely' due to an unspecified 'recent incident'.

The Humber Bridge Board announced the decision on Saturday afternoon on the back of an incident on the bridge, report the Hull Daily Mail. (link is external)

It is not yet known when - or if - the pathways will be reopened.

A spokesperson for the Humber Bridge Board said: “Due to a recent incident, we have taken the decision to close the footways on both sides of the Humber Bridge for an indefinite period.

"We appreciate this might cause some inconvenience, but we ask that pedestrians and cyclists respect the decision and avoid the Humber Bridge at the present time.�

The decision comes after multiple deaths at the bridge in the month of March.

A petition has since been launched calling for extra measures to help 'secure' the Humber Bridge and prevent or significantly reduce the amount of suicide attempts there.

The paths on either side of the 1.4 mile (2,200m) long bridge carry thousands pedestrians and cyclists to work every day.

The bridge on the outskirts of Hull crosses the Humber estuary linking East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

It opened in 1981 and is the seventh longest suspension bridge in the world..

This a business opportunity for someone enterprising and incisive.

Station a Transit type van at each of the last access points for the
bridge, both north- and south-bound.

Offer the transport of equipment (principally bicycles) and passenger
across the bridge, for a small payment.

The payment would probably have to be about £20, plus the return toll
cost so that a van may be stationed on both sides at all times,
unencumbered by the cost of tolls. With a Humbertag, that might be as
little as £2.70 return, meaning £22.70 or so for a one-way trip for a
bike and rider.

Long distance cyclist Richard Lake had made plans to cross the Humber Bridge over the Bank Holiday weekend but when he sought guidance from Humberside Police and the Humber Bridge Board he claimed “no-one knew what was going on�.

Mr Lake cycled up to the Humber Bridge on Easter Sunday and says he was told by security that he had to use the main carriageway to cross.

On his Youtube channel, Mr Lake said: “I showed up ready to ride across and at the ramp I was greeted by someone from security who said if you want to cross they expect you to use the main carriageway.

“Hopping over the barrier a little further up - I did just that. Halfway across the bridge a private security van caught up with me and by the end I reached the other side where I was being bothered by traffic police.

“They told me I should not have crossed, so naturally I explained how I came to cross over and then proceeded to ask what about people who use bikes to commute to work? What is the Humber Bridge Board doing to secure their safety?"

The decision to close footways comes after a number of deaths at the Humber Bridge in March, including the tragic death of Alex Walker on March 25 and a teenage girl just three days later.

This led to the launch of a petition which called for extra measures to reduce the number of suicide attempts at the Humber Bridge, which has so far accumulated over 8,500 signatures.

The Humber Bridge Board’s decision has divided opinion, with some praising the action taken to address the issue.

However, some have questioned it claiming that it causes further issues for commuters and that it does not address the central issue of suicide prevention.

The Humber Bridge Board have been contacted for comment.
