53/39/24 with 12-27 gearing. What do you think?
I'm planning this extreme gearing to be able to handle super uphills
and pedal too going down. (My current 50/34 with 13-29 cogs doesn't have low enough gears nor high enough gears). My plan is to spend most of the time on the 39. Then use the 24 only for climbing, and the 53 only for downhill. Total capacity is (53 - 24) + (biggest cog to use with 53 - smallest cog to use with 24) = (53 - 24) + (16 - 19) = 26. Is this the correct calculation? Would this setup work? I think the biggest potential problem is that the chain might drag on the front derailleur cage when using the granny. Comments, suggestions, please. |

If you are using Shimano, a suggestion that would work well would be to have an MTB rear derailleur (XT), use an 11-34 cassette and keep the rest of the components that you have now. This combo would get you up steep hills and down as well. |

Chain slack shouldn't be a problem if you avoid the small-small combinations. What front derailleur and shifter are you using? Shimano STI doesn't really like huge jumps. |

the problem with 11-34 is that you lose close gear spacing. but yes,
this solution could work as an event specific setup. |

I have a similar setup on my Tour Easy recumbent: 52/39/26 front, 12-28 8-speed cassette rear. It works fine, even thought I rarely use the granny chainring. When I've used it, it's gotten me up 15+ percent slopes. 52/12 high gear is good for 35+ mph cruising speed. I've used that, too. Jeff |

Campag triples are 53(2)/42/30 and I understand your replacement of the 30 with a 24t. May have trouble getting the chain off the 39t with the Campag front der. I think 1 42t middle would be more useful tho. |

i have a campy double crank and i just bought a 39T triplizer. why
would the triple fd have trouble getting the chain off the 39T? is this the same as with shimano supposedly where the difference between the big and middle rings cannot be more than 10? the double fd doesn't have a problem shifting the 39T. maybe i should see first if my current double fd will shift the 24T before i buy a triple fd. |

I'm still using a Dira Ace 7 sp freewheel and have the convenience of being
able to change cog's to suit terrain. Front is 52-40-28 @ 110BCD. Have to set up shifts under load, the old twist tooths don't do well there. Much prefer the cog change option over shift under load advantage. Just installed a 135mm Sofride aluminum suspension stem - w h a t a d i f f e r e n c e! Also, using a Tamer Tricky Dick suspension seatpost, I guess I've got a light, full suspension road bike. If yer not racing you'll appreciate the suspension parts as soon as you hit the first extra large expansion joint going down hill at speed. Have fun! |
