Bead seperation on new Cheng Shin tire

I had a bead seperate from its sidewall on a new Cheng Shin 27 x 1 1/4
after about 20 miles. Is such a problem common with this brand?

I've only seen this problem before on old tires that had some dryrot
issues-never a new tire.

I have several other tires in this brand-most not yet installed-need I
watch these?

I put the OLD 27x1 Michelin that was on the rear of that bike
previously, and found it was still a much improved ride over the Cheng
Shin too!

I have the mate of the pair on that Cheng Shin on the front-need I
worry?

I had a run of three such failures in one particular kind and size of
Schwalbe tires, which I understand are made by Cheng Shin. I
considered these to be manufacturing defects, but since I had loaded
the tires above their specification I accepted the failures without
pursuing a warranty claim. One of the three blown-out casings was
significantly overinflated, but the other two were not.

I've had no such problems with other Cheng Shin brand tires, or Cheng
Shin-made tires from Schwalbe and Primo.

In your case, one failure does not constitute a pattern. All the
same, you may want to put the Cheng Shin tire on the rear in case your
specimens all come from the same bad batch.

Same here-- and in the case of my failed Schwalbes, the casings didn't
tear but rather seemed to have "unwrapped" from the bead wires due to
failed adhesion.

I'd keep an eye on it if I were you, and switch it to the rear
wheel.

No. Sounds like a fluke. Cheng Shin is a huge tire manufacturer that
does both cheapie gumwall tires, and some pretty nice contracted
stuff. The Nashbar Prima II in 700x25 with the kevlar belt, is one of
my favorite road tires--and is made by Chen Shin. Conversely, the
tires that came on a Marin hybrid I bought 8 years ago were the
stiffest and most miserable riding rubber I've ever been punished by,
and also by Chen Shin.

If you're looking for a decent and inexpensive 27" tire, I can attest
for the ride comfort, good grip, and puncture resistance of the
Vittoria Zaffiros:

I've not had bead separation problems with Cheng Shin tires but I _do_ have
other problems with them. All seem to wear too quickly, i.e. most tread gone
within 500-700 miles. I use the 27 x 1 1/4 too; I weigh 215. The other problem
- which is more an annoyance than a problem - is either high spots or
out-of-round. I put one on the rear recently, turned around and pulled it right
off after riding just a few feet:
THUMP..........THUMP..........THUMP.......... Put that guy on the front and
front's on the rear. Much better. Both tires are Cheng Shin, purchased mebbe a
year apart.

That company's process control seems rudimentary at best (IMO). For me, all of
this is OK, because I don't wear out tires, I run over crap that either destroys
them outright or cuts them to the cords. Replacing 1, 2, or 3 six-dollar tires
per year is painless. I wouldn't be so sanguine if I rode expensive tires.
