My seat wont stay tight(pics)
The pics show all the parts. My first seat broke because it would not
stay tight. I got a replacement seat and I have the same problem. This is from an iron horse maverick comp dx. http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/6679/00006106qj.jpg http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/1737/00006147ct |

This is from an iron horse maverick comp dx. I'd start with greasing the bolt and the contact points, except the rails and the contacting part of the clamp. If it still won't stay tight, get a new post, Kalloys are about $15. |

You have to tork that bolt real tight (18-20 Nm). That is almost impossible with a normal length hex key by hand. Lou -- Posted by news://news.nb.nu |

beverage shim is always a great way to go. I've used it on my old care
extensively. *g* Some thread locking compound can help as well. |

a shim cut from a gallon poly water jug!
hole for bolt, shim spreads across to bith sides beyond rails screw down. werks gud - maybe absorbing some shock - doesn't work loose (i take the seat off every day when parking so the bolt is frequently readjusted - however shim is in place for ???? a year? ride 1-2-3 hours per day) |

Once the ridges go bad, they go bad forever unless you can cut new interlocking slots. Make sure you're not crossing ridges between the post and clamp. Better yet, get a 2-bolt seatpost. Kalloy/Rockwerks make some. At that point the first thing to fail will be the aluminum threads in the upper half of the clamp. Then you'll say, "Why didn't I get a Thomson?" -- Phil, Squid-in-Training |

This is from an iron horse maverick comp dx. I have a Leprade seat post that uses this design. It refused to hold the chromed steel rails of my Brooks saddle, and when I applied high torque to the clamp bolt, the threads in the upper clamp face distorted so that the bolt would not turn freely. Here is what I did. * Mixed up some JB Weld * Set the two pieces of the saddle rail clamp faces face up * Dribbled JB Weld on the eight corners of the rail clamp faces where they meet the saddle rails. * Let cure for several hours. * This forms pads that concentrate the clamping force to exert greater pressure, and has greater friction to hold the saddle rails better. * Took the bolt to the hardware store. * Bought a nut that fits the bolt. * Bought a bolt the same size and pitch, but 1 nut depth longer. * Drilled the threads out of the upper clamp face. * Mixed up a dab more JB weld. * Put a small amount of JB weld on the outer rim of the nut to hold the nut to upper clamp face, and set the nut into it. ( Important that the JB weld not find its way into the threads.) ( This bit of gluing is only to make the nut and upper clamp face a single unit) * Let the JB Weld cure. * Reassembled the clamp and installed the saddle. * Bought a Salsa seat post for the next bicycle. -- Michael Press |
