So Paul, are you saying that a dog walker on the path has a 'duty of
care' to watch for cyclists moving faster than him, and to 'make way'
(for want of a better phrase) if one comes along? I'm only asking for
clarification here - if thats *not* your point then I do apologise and
would love your correction

No; assuming that the shared use path is wide enough to allow users to
pass each other safely then dogs should be kept close in and preferably
on the outside purely as a matter of consideration for others. In the
same way that the cyclists should slow down if needing to pass at all
closely.

But what happens when the path *isn't* wide enough?

Would you expect a group of walkers on a narrow country road to give way
when you come up behind them in your car?

Yes, eventually.

I nearly said something to a woman last week as I was on the towpath - I
heard her saying to a chap that cyclists ought to slow down as the sign says
to give way to other users as they go along at 50mph.

She was refering to 2 kids in front of me who were going a bit faster than I
was (10mph). The chap was walking 3 little dogs none of them on leads and
one was 30 yards behind the others and kept stopping to crap. He of course
wasn't going to walk back and clean it up as the signs say he has to

Presumably the woman thinks that signs only apply to cyclists and
would be upset (real or pretend) if advised of the hypocrisy of her
position.

Standard cognitive dissonance innit, as practiced by various trolls on this
NG.

No blinkers involved nully, I was pointing out the main differences
between Judith and "judith" to BB (who may have got the names
mixed). I didn't think that including attempted sarcasm, selective
snipping and trolling amongst the list of "judith's" 'attributes'
was necessary for correct identification.

No sarcasm intended Colin, I was merely expressing my opinion that it
was possible you were blinded to the actions of some regulars. I only
'selectively snipped' in order to cut down on the length of the
message,
but I'm sure you'll agree that reading the full posts that I snipped
from will show I've not 'misrepresented' them in any way. As for
trolling, are you aware of the expression that goes along the lines of
"One mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter"?

No, no, no, nully. I wasn't accusing you of sarcasm etc I was pointing out the differences between Judith and "judith" to BB (who had probably used the wrong name ie Judith in his post). As far as I'm concerned "judith" has used attempted sarcasm, selective snipping and trolling etc on here on more than one occasion, hence my expansion on her 'attributes'. As my original reply to BB only concerned J and j and no other posters , blinkers (or any other posters comments etc) don't come into it.

"There I was mountaineering walking along this narrow ledge in the
Alps when all of a sudden I came face to face with this gorgeous
blonde, I didn't know whether to block her passage or toss meself off"

That got Max Miller banned from the BBC for 5 years, allegedly.

"Under Control" seems to mean something completely different
to many dog walkers than it does to me.

I personally believe that under control is on a shortish lead unlike the old
dears who are on the canal bank with dog at one side and them at the other.

I have sometimes seen dogs not on a lead that are very much under
control. When I used to ride the B2B almost daily, I started to
recognise the dogs I saw regularly, and learnt how predictable they were.

OTOH there were some dogs on a short lead, which definitely were not
under control of the owner.
