Default trekking bar

If one puts a trekking bar on a road bike, what changes are
needed in the stem? I've seen one claim a shorted stem is
needed, another recommended the same or longer stem. Seeking
opinions.

It depends on whether you plan on using the front or rear section
primarily. If you plan to ride on the front, you want a shorter stem.
if you plan to ride on the rear, you want a longer one.

Personally, if I were to use such a bar, I'd go for the longer stem.
I'd have my levers at the rear, and use the fronts for stretching out
into a semi-aero position for headwinds.
