Dewd, you really have an unhealthy preoccupation with JD, it's time to
move on.

"ballers"? :-0

Its like any other group - the few who are making all the noise are the
ones we all hear about. Most guys are just playing the sport because its
fun. I really don't think it taught them much about managing confrontation
off the field, partly because most were such dolts at it.

Dan, you make my brain hurt.

On 2004-08-19, Dan Volker penned:

If you played highschool football, you learned that if you shove
someone, you are going to get shoved back--and what it feels like. You
will know all about planning to hit someone, and expecting to be hit.
The nerd on the chess club--as the flip side, does not experience
physical retaliation for his attacks, and without this as a
consequence, and without experiencing the crushing physical impacts,
he has a flawed view of "consequences" in a confrontation. He can
make threats, and fear only words coming back at him.

That little quote just goes to show how clueless you are about nerd life.
Nerds experience physical retaliation for their attacks, whether the attacks
were physical or not. In fact, nerds get the added bonus of experiencing
physical retaliation when they didn't do anything at all!

I don't tend to "push" someone I don't know to the point of wanting to
fight....The chess club nerd may not have any idea where this line is,
or what the ramifications would be if a fight ensued. Moreover, they
do not see words as leading to a fight, whereas in real life, the
words they would use "would" lead to a fight. This is the
dysfunction--the talk that goes way over the line, meaning they
expect no consequences, because in all their life, they never run
into situations where consequences exist.

Again, where do you get off thinking that non-jocks don't get into fights and
that they don't get hit?

Lemme throw one out there for ya. And I won't skimp on the stereotypes, since
you keep droning on about the "chess club nerd." Maybe a muscle-bound oaf
needs a lesson in getting beat down before he figures out that violence begets
violence. Nerds are smart enough to extrapolate from their experiences and
figure these things out without ever having to pick a fight! I know this
comes as a shocker to you, but not everyone has to put their hand in front of
a flamethrower to figure out that fire burns!

In AMB, as long as someone like JD is tolerated by the group, he gets
to talk his talk without consequences. Killfiling him is basically
tolerating him. If 40 people slammed him every time he made an
unprovoked attack, this would either take up so much of his time in
responding that it would be negative reinforcement, or he would at
least be more likely to see himself as a butthead. This begs the
question---"Does MV see himself as a butthead?" and the answer would
be no, since he's a sick, neurotic ******* that makes JD look like a
role model. Sick people like MV are a case entirely separate, and
ignoring him would seem to be the only solution.

Dan, the impression you've given everyone throughout this discussion is
that *you're* the bully, not JD. You've done this by citing examples
from your own life. The mental model of the world that you've divulged
is so simplistic and flawed that it hurts me to realize that maybe you
actually believe what you're saying. You've made it clear that you live
in a world of might makes right, and it's pretty clear which side you've
been on.

As for your laughable claim that JD would be stymied by having everyone slam
him whenever he attacks someone -- just how naive are you? I've seen forums
where this sort of approach has been attempted. It just drags everyone into
massive, never-ending flame fests. It's *much* better to ignore a troll than
to try to make him see the light. And again, not everyone agrees about who is
trolling whom.

Let me put this in simple terms: You're damaging your reputation on this
newsgroup with every post. The sooner you stop whining about what a
dick JD is, the sooner everyone will forget about it and go on with
business as usual. And believe me, I speak from experience on this one.

See previous post. Bikes were attached properly. Problem=design

flaw.

Yeah, blame it on a "design flaw". You're funny.

Well, each bike was attached at a different time, by different people,

yet
both were coming off. The design incorporates a lot of "bounce" due to

the
hinge feature that allows fold-down for SUV hatchbacks. We'd

double-checked
installation to ensure that it had been done correctly as well. This is

the
first time this particular rack had been on the freeway. The rack

bounced
the bikes right off the end . .

Hmmm, every non-egghead I know who uses a rack like that backs up the
fastening system with straps or bungees. Now go back to your books.

You are such a jackass, JD. Only you (or MV) could judge someone solely by
their email address. Grow up.

That's a very white flag you've got there. Did you use bleach on it?

I think this statement should have a big "Whoooossshhhhhhh...." attached to it.
;-)

JD has been an integral and appreciated part of this group (except for his tutu
habit) foir many years. A number of folks here ride with him regularly, and
many have dropped in to sample his hospitality and have reported favourably on
it.
You, OTOH, are a relative newbie who has picke da fight and doesn't seem to
know how to back down gracefully. There are examples of strategic withdrawals
strewn throughout this group.
If

Except that it seems to be you who are being the butthead here. And 40 people
do slam you when you say silly things. Are we getting through to you on this
one?

Oh, I hope not. He's much more entertaining the way he is.

I'm sorry, is this a contest or something? I don't come to usenet to 'win'
arguments.

The only reason I entered this thread was because I think it's weak when
people are discouraged from offering their opinion by the antagonizing
comments of others, such as yourself or MV. If you think it's cool to "say
whatever, whenever" then you would respect that, as I do.

And for the record -- I really do respect honesty, but part of becoming an
adult is realizing that it's not acceptable to personally attack others,
especially when unprovoked. There is a distinct difference between telling
it how you think it is, and telling someone they are a worthless moron for
thinking differently. It seems to make you happy, insulting people you don't
know, using archaic stereotypes and grade-school taunts. Whatever, man.

As Monique correctly pointed out, noone is going to change you, especially
not me. I have, however, grown weary of responding to this thread. *Plonk*

Man, let it go. JD and his butt-sniffing groupies are much more childish
than you. They can go on for weeks with all this. Go ride!

I like Trek bikes man, MTB and Road. Everyone likes what they ride, if it's
working for ya, beat the hell out of it until the time for a new one comes
along.
