Paul Morningstar died about two weeks ago, probably from a
booby trap he set to protect himself.

Paul was one of the many bike industry folks who loved
cycling and built stuff that improved the bike world. He
was also an avid supporter of organized cycling near his home.

In this case, he mostly built tools, rather than bike parts,
so many folks have benefitted without even knowing, because
they took their stuff to a shop using his tools.

His well-known tools include the Freehub Buddy and tools for
aligning wheels and disk rotors. He long sold an
aftermarket dial gague for Park wheel truing stands, it was
popular enough that Park finally came out with their own.

Like many folks (both inside and outside the bike industry)
he was vigorous in some areas and erattic in others.

Six months ago, he told me a neighbor was trying to poison
him, but more recently it sounded like he had gotten over
that. But according to one newspaper report, a neighbor
(the one Paul said was trying to kill him) said for six or
more years Paul believed he was a target.

He was seen by neighbors on the 18th (I got e-mail from him
that day.) That night, a neighbor heard a "bang" and
moaning; after nobody saw him a couple days, they called
police -- who sent in a robot, due to rumors there might be
home-made bombs. They found several.
