Cyclist finds dead man on bike

Sad case.

A motorcyclist tragically died on the operating table as surgeons desperately attempted to save his life following a crash in Hull, an inquest heard.

Mark Donnelly had been drinking with a friend and then drove home over the limit on his Suzuki SV650 motorbike in the early hours of the morning.

Hull Coroners Court heard that Mark was found unconscious by a cyclist at the junction of Holderness Road and Mount Pleasant on November 1, 2019.

He was rushed to Hull Royal Infirmary but sadly his injuries were too severe for him to survive.

Tributes were previously paid to Mark by his childhood friend Jordan Wilson, who said he had a "heart of gold".

The pair met when Jordan was "around seven or eight" and became firmer friends as they grew up.

Both keen motorbike riders, Jordan said they would often chat about bikes and he would repair anything that was wrong with Mark's motorbike.

Jordan said: "He would do anything for anyone. Two months ago I needed to borrow a motorbike bag and he lent me it but I never got chance to give it back.

"He was a big family man and would go out and see them in Withernsea.

"He was funny and a really good guy with such a good sense of humour.

"Mark touched a lot of people's hearts. He was so friendly, polite and well mannered too. As soon as you met him you would get along with him.

"He was loved by so many people. To me, he was a really close mate and will never be forgotten. I will always miss him.

"He was like a big brother to me. I've not had many friends like Mark."

Coroner Professor Paul Marks gave Mr Donnelly's cause of death to be injuries due to a road traffic accident and gave a conclusion of accidental death.

He said that toxicology results showed that alcohol was detected in Mark's system at level of recreational use above the legal limit for driving.

A collision investigation determined that there were no suspicious circumstances around the cause of the accident.
"Emergency treatment was administered by paramedics and Mark was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary at 1.57am," said Professor Marks.

"Resuscitation was administered, but scans showed serious internal damage.

"Mark was taken to the operating theatre for laparotomy but sadly he died on the operating table."

Professor Marks also set out what happened in the time leading up to Mark's sad death.

"On October 31, 2019, Mark had been visiting a friend and spent the day with her at her flat," he said.

"In the evening they walked to The Bank pub and Mark had three pints of Carling lager and on returning to the flat, had four tins of larger. (sic)

"He left the friend's house at 1.30am on November 1, 2019, and the following day a female friend noticed on leaving the flat that Mark's motorcycle was in the road."
