Using a bike as a stationary bike
Long story. Here's the short version.
Wife has a new Townie 3-speed. She needs to ride for exercise but she's in no shape to ride right now. Don't want to invest in a stationary bike. Is there a stand that will let her set the rear wheel of the Townie on the stand and pedal away -- the stand would hold the bike upright and allow us to dial in resistance. Later, when she's dropped a few pounds, put on some muscle, and is ready to ride on the road, we take the Townie off the stand and ride normally. And -- she could ride on the stand inside in bad weather. Appreciate your comments and advice -- links to stands would be nice, too. Thanks. |

Available at local bike shop or mail order (e.g. Nashbar). I like the "magnetic" (resistance) ones. Typically start at around $100. Usually quiet enough to watch TV without raising the volume. I ride in winter, my wife doesn't, she uses the trainer. I use it as a repair stand. They're easy to set up & fold flat for storage. |
