Does anybody know what's with the additional last names

Didn't it used to be just plain Alberto Contador and
just plain Alejandro Valverde?

Spanish custom is to use both your parents surnames. Father's 1st,
Mother's 2nd. Example, Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver. Purito's easier!
