Doesn't that disprove your theory that all cyclists ride on pavements?

If someone does a journey of [a number of] miles how many yards do they
have to travel on a cycle path to be counted in that 99%?

Indeed, there are instances on many roads where it would be almost

suicidal to NOT cycle on the path, but of course cycling much slower and
respecting pedestrians etc. If the path is narrow and busy with
pedestrians, then common sense tells one to walk with the bike.

Nugents are the person to answer this. They have often pointed out that pavement driving is OK because motorists only travel a portion of their journey on the footway.

I would have thought that in residential/shopping areas it mainly
depends on whether the path takes the cyclist where they want to go and
that it doesn't require a stop/start every 20 yards.

From a brief visit to Cambridge, it seemed that a lot of paths were on
road, using space "stolen" from payers of that mythical "road tax".

but of course cycling much slower and
respecting pedestrians etc. If the path is narrow and busy with
pedestrians, then common sense tells one to walk with the bike.

Shouldn't a cycle path offer a reasonable expectation that it's ok to
cycle along it?

Err... Cheerless was referring to cycling on ...actual cycle paths.

I was in Cambridge this evening (from the late afternoon until about 22:00).

Witha small caveat about the proportion you quote, I don't think you're
wrong.

....though one rarely listens to the voice of common sense when cycling, eh?

I might have been lucky, I only noticed one complete ****wit on a bike,
no helmet, rding in the road, with a baby trailer on the back, having
ignored a red light he was then stuck in the middle of a junction.
