So he hasn't slept for the past week, waiting for his new fixie to arrive...

He can smell that new bike. The scent is trailing from the UPS truck...

The bike arrives today.

Has he worn out the 'refresh' button on the browser, trying to track UPS's
movements down to the linear foot?

Damn you really CAN"T coast on these things can you?"

At least that's what it sounded like on my first fixed foray.

He has many, many years of experience with fixies, that won't be a
problem...

But me on the other hand...I'm still learning how to stop...

see Carla ride, see Carla attempt to stop, see Carla crash into bushes on
the side of the road...

While the hop-to-rear-wheel-lockup-skid thing is pretty damn cool, please don't
tell me you ride on LI without at least a front brake...

A brake is a complete must have...
Although I have to say Carla has gotten very good at anticipating and really only
uses it when really nessesary...
RR coming and yes the maiden voyage for me was brakeless...

As my not quite three year old son says everytime he's in the middle of doing
something dangerous, "be carepul".

Bike content: he figured out how to pedal and steer at the same time last
weekend. We'll work on brakes next....

What do kids usually get on their bikes these days... is it still coaster brakes
or do they start right up with hand brakes?

My kids started with disc brakes because they offer superior
modulation.

Coaster.

J'm Smith says:

Amplitude, Frequency, Pulse or Phase?

In Pete's case - Amplitude.

ducks and runs - no brakes needed here!

Depends. My daughters pre sale Schwinn has rear coaster, and front
hand. But I added that last part myself. :-)

Well the classic place to start is with a brakeless fixie (with three wheels).

We skipped that step as a buddy of mine gave my son a Giant Animator BMXy thing
with coaster brake. It was a bit aspirational as the gift was given before he
could even walk. I'll probably add handbrakes to it sometime in the next year
or so to get him used to the idea. I figure his next bike will probably be
handbrakes only.

If I had it to do over (which I do, as my other son just turned one) I'd go the
tricycle route first. The fact that there's no freewheel makes the connection
between turning pedals and forward motion much more clear.
