Ok, they lie less than the usually gross exaggerations. Offhand, I
would estimate that every spec was cranked up by about 50% on this
light.

I did say *more* realistic, not accurate and truthful ;-)

I like the "584 meter" beam distance. Not 585, certainly not 583.
Precisely 584!

I'd like to see what that beam looks like from the side.

Note the beam is ONLY a high intensity spot light. That coupled with not being able to use it for long on high beam doesn't meke it all that useful.

Cheers

But 584 metres isn't a terribly long way. The side navigating lights
on a 40 ft. boat have to be visible for 1 mile and they are just a
little incandescent light bulb :-) 1 mile = 1,609.344 metre's :-)

I was curious about how the beam stops at precisely 584 meters. I
imagine a vertical wall 585 meters in front of that light must be in
complete darkness.

Everybody lies, but that's ok because nobody understands the specs.
After all, weren't lighting specs designed to make it easier to lie?
Actually, I'm impressed. Fudging the numbers by only 50% is a unique
and amazing display of self-restraint.

Megalumens for the masses:

Drivel: I was playing with one of these L10 flashlights yesterday.

120 lumens max. $25. It was nothing I considered impressive until I
decided to see what PWM (pulse width modulation) frequency it uses for
dimming. Well, it doesn't use PWM. Instead, it uses current
controlled dimming. No strobe effects and no flicker. Nice.

This one?
http://www.galls.com/streamlight-protac-hl-flashlight
It uses two CR123A Lithium cells. These are about $1.50/ea on eBay or
about $6/ea in the stores. The cells for $0.50/ea from Hong Kong are
marginal junk. Some are good, while others arrived pre-discharged.
This could be a very expensive flashlight to operate.

Try again and look for something that uses 18650 lithium ion cells, or
2nd best, runs on AA Eneloop NiMH batteries. Better yet, here's my
specs for a decent bicycle flashlight:
1. Flat battery pack (more aerodynamic and easier to store).
2. Carbon fiber tube package (light weight).
3. Automatic dimming based on ambient and approaching light.
4. Built in CMOS camera and micro-SD card for recording "events".
5. Battery "fuel gauge".
6. Dynamo input for charging battery, not running the light.
7. "Be Seen" mode with programmable light show and color changes.
8. Optional flare or paintball gun with laser target designator.
9. Minimum fumble on/off and illumination controls. Touch switch?
Motion triggered on/off?
10. Easily removable mounting for theft prevention.
11. Individually replaceable LED modules.
12. Fiberoptic rear light pipe.
13. Horizontally polarized light to reduce glare when wearing
vertically polarized anti-glare glasses.
14. Flexible adjustable reflector to allow for customized light
patterns.
15. Dual lights the rotate ahead of the turn so that you can see where
the bicycle is going, not where it's pointed.
16. Laser parallax distance measurement so that the beam always lands
a specific distance ahead on the road, no matter the hills and turns.
17. Excessive closing speed crash alarm.
18. Side lighting.
19. Turn signal flashers.
20. Easily replaceable outer case/skin for easy crash recovery.
