Which hydraulic brakes to get? Juicy 7, Hope Mini, Magura Marta (SL or reg)?
Hi, I wanted to upgrade my Avid mechanicals to a lightweight hydraulic
system; what are your experiences with the above choices? Any other ones out there I should consider? This will be going on my '03 Ellsworth Truth/XTR/Crossmax XL/Fox Talas bike, and I am interested in some weight savings, but also wanted to maintain or improve outright braking performance, modulation, and feel but keeping the rotor at a manageable 160mm or less...I ride mostly XC, technical, and do not huck or do crazy freeride/downhill. |

I would go for at pair og Formula B4 SL. Really really lightweight. About 600 grams per pair. A friend of mine uses them and he is really satisfied. The brake just as good as they look, thats for sure ( a matter of taste :-) Think about it Peet |

I didn't think the Juicy 7 was out yet. My vote goes for the hope mini - set them up right at first and they work excellently. Steve. |

The only disc I've owned is the Hope Mini, but I've ridden bikes with others on, and ridden with people using other ones. I definitely, really _really_, rate the Hopes - they stop, they slow to any desired degree in any riding conditions, all the time every time, and they're tough. I don't know how much they weigh, because Idon't care - I bought them because they work, very well. Shaun aRe - YMMV, but _only_ if you have the wheel size entered incorrectly. |

It's all based on hearsay, but I was planning to upgrade with Hope Minis. Alternatively, I've heard very good things about the Shimano XT brakes. -- Westie |

Hi, I wanted to upgrade my Avid mechanicals to a lightweight hydraulic system; I'd suggest trying the handles of all the candidates - just find a bike on display somewhere, sit on it, and fool around with the handles. Some handles fit some people's hands better than others... ----------------------- PeteCresswell |

From the completely irrational department... Get the Juicys. They'll be the slickest, coolest, neatest thing on two wheels for the year or so after they're out, should work better than anything else (given Avid's track record), and the staggering price shouldn't matter to you, since the bike you're looking at is already what, like 5G? "No-one else has them" is reason enough for the Juicys. Why not. Chris |

But seriously, I am more interested in lightweight and stopping power, two traits that may be mutually exclusive when it comes to brakes. thanks for all the responses...I guess I'll have to do a bit more research, and reading mtbreview.com... |

But seriously, I am more interested in lightweight and stopping power, two traits that may be mutually exclusive when it comes to brakes. Maybe others would disagree, but I'd say my disc brakes (Hope C2's and Avid mechs) don't have any more stopping power than the v-brakes I had in their place for a few days. What they do have is a more sensitive feel (better modulation?) , one-finger operation, better stopping power in heavy rain, tolerance of out-of-true wheels, and no rim wear in muddy cnditions. ----------------------- PeteCresswell |

V gates going. I maintain that unless you're in some kind of constant slop, or are always going with gravity, V's are the way to go. If you want to spend money, like the OP, get Avid Ultimates...I did. They certainly are lighter than hydraulics. Of course, you're right about "more sensitive feel (better modulation?), one-finger operation, better stopping power in heavy rain, tolerance of out-of-true wheels, and no rim wear in muddy conditions, but the extra weight and cost of replacement pads/hubs keeps me in V territory.
