Upgrade to a bomb prof racing/training wheel
Ted Wrote: big Pete wrote: Hi all, A lbs can get me a campy hub that will fit the spacing of my 1986 Binache road bike. I would prefer a 36 holed hub. I am 245 pounds. I was thinking of getting a low/mid end double walled duel eyeleted rim. The current hub on the bike is suntour and the rim is Araya. Here are my questions: 1) Is the campy hub any stronger than the one I have now (the one I have on the bike is the original suntour hub)? Doubt it. It is shinier, may have better bearings, and will get more attention from bike geeks. What's wrong with the present hub? 2) Will a low/mid double walled rim be stronger than the original Araya rim? Maybe. Why do you want to replace the rim? 3) What would be a good spoke pattern for a big guy like me? Two cross? Three cross? Crows foot? Or a mix? That's easy. Three cross. Any other ideas and/or comments would be welcome. Thanks Pete P.S. I want to build this myself. Good on ya. The problem with my present hub is that I feel it is not strong enough. My axel is bent. I want to get a new rim because I am not abel to true it any more. Some of the spokes can not be tightened or loosened any more. I think the rim needs to be taken off and straitened (i.e. the rim is a slight Dorito). So basically what you are saying is that I should replace my bent axel, straiten my rim and respoke with three cross? When I respoke is it a good idea to use washers between the spoke and hub? What benefits does this give? -- big Pete |

Change to a solid axle and nuts, maintainig exixting bearings, if good, and so keeping transmission as is. I want to get a new rim because I am not abel to true it any more. What benefits does this give? Rim is dented? If not it should be OK. You'll know if you need washers, the spokes don't fit the hub flange without. Try building with the old spokes first. Trevor |

No. You could do this if you are trying to be economical, but that axle will probably bend again. Modern, i.e. cassette, hubs are much better in that regard. The rim can be straightened, but you are better off to replace it. You may find that it's less expensive to simply buy an appropriate wheel because what you are looking for is common. But you said you wanted to do it yourself, and I'm all in favor of that. When I respoke is it a good idea to use washers between the spoke and hub? What benefits does this give? It stabilizes the spoke head in the hub flange hole, but this is very rarely needed with alloy hubs. Ted |
