Perhaps he meant battens?
https://www.google.com/search?q=battens&tbm=isch

or baseball bats?
https://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&q=%22three+baseball+bats%22

or cake batter?

It's enough to drive me batty.

Nah, but this is probably more realistically advertised, and it seems to
LED and controller may catch fire if used on high beam for too long!

I like the "584 meter" beam distance. Not 585, certainly not 583.
Precisely 584!

I'd like to see what that beam looks like from the side.

But 584 metres isn't a terribly long way. The side navigating lights
on a 40 ft. boat have to be visible for 1 mile and they are just a
little incandescent light bulb :-) 1 mile = 1,609.344 metre's :-)

I was curious about how the beam stops at precisely 584 meters. I
imagine a vertical wall 585 meters in front of that light must be in
complete darkness.

Magic :-)

Ahem. There are standard test procedures for such things as range
(also known a "throw"):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flashlight#Performance_standards
The working distance is defined as the distance at which the
maximum light falling on a surface (illuminance) would fall
to 0.25 lux. This is comparable to a full moon on a clear night.
The distance is calculated from the square root of (the beam
intensity in candelas divided by 0.25 lux); for example, a
beam intensity of 1000 candelas produces a working range rating
of the square root of (1000/0.25), or 63 meters.

You can guess where the full moon reference originated.

The problem is getting the light output in candelas:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candela
This should help:
http://www.ledrise.com/shop_content.php?coID=18

Search eBay for "luxmeter" and you'll find a bunch of cheap light
meters that are allegedly calibrated in lux or foot-candles.

Ansi FL1-2009 specs:
http://webstore.ansi.org/RecordDetail.aspx?sku=ANSI%2FNEMA+FL+1-2009
http://flashlightwiki.com/ANSI-NEMA_FL-1
http://www.led-resource.com/ansi-fl1-standard/
http://www.streamlight.com/documents/ansi/ansi-pres.pdf

Homework: Find a light meter or luxmeter, angle guesser, and tape
measure. Measure the luminous flux (lux) and calculate the "throw" or
range your bicycle light is rated. Bragging rights will be awarded to
whomever lies the least (or the best).

Wouldn't the lighting requirements for a boat be specified in nautical
miles?

Or fathoms? At least, if it sinks? ;-)

The Merchant Shipping (Distress Signals and Prevention
of Collisions) Regulations states the visibility for lighting as
"mile". But, later in the document a table of "Sound signal intensity
and range of audibility" uses the term "nautical miles".

A fathom is 6 feet. Regardless if it is up, down, or on the level :-)
