2. In researching Shimagnolo adapter options I have run across some
claims that while running 9s Ergo with a Campy rder and 9s Shimano

hub
will work OK up to a point, it would still be better to use a
conversion cassette or something like the Shiftmate
(http://www.jtekengineering.com/shiftmate.htm) to get the best
possible shifting. Is that true or am I worrying too much? The
Shiftmate is relatively inexpensive (presuming it works) but
conversion cassettes are not. Cost is an issue, but I don't wan't

to
come out of this with mediocre shifting. Any advice or direct
experiences with these options would be appreciated.

worry a bit .. i ran 9sp campag shifters with a 9sp shimano hub and it
drove
me nuts. after about 6 weeks (of pop can shims and lots of tinkering)
i
sold the wheel and built up a campag rear wheel. other people claim
it's
the same, i dunno. ymmv really seems to apply here.

but that shiftmate looks pretty interesting. the conversion cassettes
are
amazingly expensive and i didn't even consider them as an option. $40
for
the shiftmate i probably would have tried.

I used Chorus 9sp with Centaur 9sp shifting Ultegra 12-27 for 2 months
and it DOES work; however, on a whim I decided to try the shiftmate and
it made a noticable improvement to me and was easier to dial-in the rear
derailleur. To me it was worth the $40, but you could always try
yourself without the shiftmate and then add it on if you weren't 100%
happy. Most people seem to get acceptable performance without any
special modifications.

Of course, I just trashed my rear wheel in a nasty crash and am now
thinking about replacing with a campy wheel and putting a 9sp campy
cassette on there. I'm assuming a campy 9sp cassette will run fine
with Shimano chainrings up-front.

yea, it does work. just not particuliary well (not for me).

i don't get this. i gather 10s spacing must be a lot better with shimano
9sp or something, but shifting with the 9sp brifter verged on sucking. it
was okay if i stayed out of the small cog but i run smaller rings up front
and used the 12 a fair bit. skip, skip, skip. no amount of r/d adj. could
get it to work acceptably on both the 12 and on the larger cogs.

yes. works with my TA rings & ultegra crank just fine. i think you'd be
crazy not to do it "right" and get a campag rear hub. 9sp veloce cassettes
are pretty cheap.
