Crank for Sturmey-Archer 8-speed
I'm trying to put a new Sturmey-Archer 8-speed hub on a set of wheels for
a hybrid/city bike, but Sheldon Brown's calculator tells me that I need to use a 30-tooth on the crank to get a usable gear range. I can't imagine that the S-A folks didn't anticipate this problem, namely, that there are no single gear cranks that small, but I haven't found any mention of this. I don't think S-A offers a crank of this kind. I'm wondering if anyone here has heard of how to set one of these up? |

Most of the success stories I've heard about these hubs have been with small-wheel bikes: recumbents, folders, etc. If you haven't already purchased the hub, I'd say go for a Nexus instead. That said, if you can find an old 94/58mm triple, you can get a 30T middle ring for it, and either use short bolts or put a bashguard on the outer position. Probably cheaper to get a 110/74 crank like a Sugino XD, use a longer BB to get the chainline you want on the granny ring, and either put a bashguard on the outer position, or dremel off the mounts for the larger rings. |

That's great idea. No reason to **** away money on the aluminum ringed XD600 when you're just gonna ditch two rings either. The XD300 + a Salsa bash guard would be a really sweet looking and serve as a trouser saver as well. The granny or middle ring at 26 or 36 could work. |
