Default OT 8 cyclists dead in one hit: groups of cyclists should be illegal

This would not have happened if they had been riding a reasonable distance
apart.

No doubt champagne corks are popping chez Cheerful.

Tony

* "Police said the driver had been stripped of his licence earlier this
year for dangerous driving and now faces multiple charges of culpable
homicide.

They confirmed that he had been breaking the speed limit."

Perhaps they were in a peloton:

Noun - Psycholist
Pronunciation Key : psy·cho·list.
Origin: based on the outbursts of a rabid Psycholist called Guy
Chapman

Examples:

8) "Peloton" - a rabble of psycholists who think they are above
the law.

Incredible, a driver high on Cannabis ploughs into cyclists and your
'take' on it is the cyclists were too close together. A new low .

If the cyclists had been further apart then it is very unlikely that he
would have had difficulty overtaking them one at a time, and even if he had
hit one, it is unlikely that he would have gone on to hit a further eleven.
So the cyclists increased their risk of a crash. Surely the aim of all road
users should be to minimise the chance of any untoward incident?

Judith,
This is just nonsense you've made up yourself, isn't it?

In Italy they enjoy cycling at weekend in groups always a cheerful
wave to other cyclists and in the main cycle sensibly two abreast
while cycling in Italy we have always found drivers courteous and even
coach drivers on twisty mountain roads give you plenty of room.

Do you actually read the reports you post references to ?

" A preliminary investigation showed the speeding car ran headfirst
into the group of 10
cyclists who were riding in the opposite direction on state road 18,
according to Italy's highway authority."

"ANSA said the driver was trying to pass another car when he hit the
group. Visibility was good at the time, reports said."

the initial reports merely said that he was overtaking and made no mention
of rain, it was reasonable to assume that it meant overtaking the cyclists.
If the cyclists had been in single file and a reasonable distance apart then
there would have been more room available, and even if one had been hit is
is very unlikely that all would have been hit.
Therefore it is still extremely relevant, especially in the rain that
cyclists do not bunch up in an unwieldy lump.
