Actually, I know it because it was named for one of two incidents of
completely independent acts of defiance by Jews to their plight: under
Nazi rule http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Frankfurter Almost no one
knows about this, and only slightly more about the other, even though
it had much more serious repercussions: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herschel_Grynszpan
In fact, I would say that the latter has been suppressed by French
authorities which instead have chosen to idolise Guy Moquet because
they hate independent acts and prefer Moquet who died for nothing
while following orders.

I am almost certain that you are correct, at least in the U.S.
Certainly I've heard neither of Frankfurter nor Grynszpan--thanks for
posting this.

Steve

Your source border on revisionist Neo-Nazism. In particular, I cite
the passage: "The Wilhelm Gustloff was named after a man considered by
some during the time to be a German martyr. Wilhelm Gustloff had been
the leader of the NSDAP in Switzerland and he was assassinated in
1936."

First of all, the "some" alluded to consists of almost exclusively of
Nazis, the Swiss themselves were embarrassed by the whole thing since
they weren't particularly fond of the Swiss Nazi party and they
somewhat reluctantly went through the trial which was attended in
large part by German Nazis, because they were forced to appease
Germany, their most powerful neighbor which could squash them at a
moment's notice. Moreover, the death of Gustloff meant the end of
Swiss Nazism to the relief of almost all Swiss. Finally, Switzerland
freed Frankfurter as soon as the war was over and eventually absolved
him of all responsibility by lifting the ban on his return to
Switzerland.

The second sentence is the one which most clearly betrays revisionist
Neo-Nazism. In particular, the acronym NSDAP for Nazi party is used
to "clean up" Gustloff's fascist and antisemitic agenda, even more so
than the term National Socialism which is sometimes used even by non
Neo-Nazis. In particular, in Frankfurter's trial by his defense
attorney, as seen in the movie "Konfrontation" about the affair (I
added that reference to the Wikipedia page, I must be one of the few
people who ever saw it).

That said, I don't condone the sinking of that ship, though I don't
mourn the death of all those Germans either. Next time, please find a
more neutral account.

Thanks. There's a very good recent book on the Gustloff affair which
includes a chapter on Grynszpan: Gillabert Matthieu, "La propagande
nazie en Suisse : L'affaire Gustloff, 1936", Presses Polytechniques
Universitaires Romandes (14 avril 2008)
