Optical illusions, I suppose ...
For those deprived of Paris-Nice, just a couple of observations, though I
guess I must have been under an influence, dreaming, or am just plain lying. Sandy Casar, riding tubulars, flats the front one, and has to ride 1,5km until the Mavic car can help him out. I guess he would have done better on clinchers. Floyd Landis did the unthinkable ! During the last 30 km of the race (they didn't show a lot of him earlier), he rode uphill, on false flats, even on the flats, with hand in hooks and out of the saddle. He must have a fashion mag contract that pays even better than Phonak. A couple of days ago, Laurent (Agritubel) did the same for around 40 of the 130 km escape. Such phony posing. No wonder he didn't win the stage. And that's why Landis only came in second today. Got to get that TV adjusted..... -- Sandy The above is guaranteed 100% free of sarcasm, denigration, snotty remarks, indifference, platitudes, fuming demands that "you do the math", conceited visions of a better world on wheels according to [insert NAME here]. |

Got to get that TV adjusted..... -- Sandy Don't know how much time was devoted to Landis during the broadcast you watched, but I see 5 still shots on cyclingnews.com and 2 more on velonews.com, and all the shots show him either on the brake hoods of the flats of the bars. Just how much time did they show him in the hooks? (I'm assuming you're using that term where I might use the term 'drops'). Lots of time. While I won't guess what he was doing when they didn't show him (yes, I was glued to the tv), he led a two man break that way, he accelerated that way, he came through half the last two kilometers that way. He also was on the hoods, and he also rested his forearms on the bar at the center. Laurent was even more dedicated to this position. And if you don't think I saw correctly (I must has hallucinated, according to a big-wig in this forum), there are regular correspondents here who may have watched it from an even closer vantage point. Actually, it could be said, I think fairly, that Floyd was in the hooks for 70% or more of the last 30 km, though not all out of the saddle. Really. I haven't figured out the tv freeze-frame deal on the adsl feed to the computer, but I tried. Lots more stages to come. -- Bonne route ! Sandy Verneuil-sur-Seine FR |

Sandy Casar, riding tubulars, flats the front one, and has to ride 1,5km
until the Mavic car can help him out. I guess he would have done better on clinchers. He wouldn't necessarily have done any worse. I've seen folks flat front clinchers and ride them down twisty decents and along flats at over 20 mph for far longer than 1.5 km.... A front flat on a clincher doesn't necessarily mean "instant yard sale"...myths be damned! |

It all depends on whether you prefer for there to be rubber between your rim and the road, or whether you prefer to have the tire squirm around and expose your rim to the road surface directly. Not sure 'bout you... but I know which I'd prefer. Mark Hickey Habanero Cycles http://www.habcycles.com Home of the $795 ti frame |
