Default Potential new bike, Foes FXR, the good the bad the ugly

I'd never buy anything without subjecting my carefully thought out plan
to the acid test, so here goes.

03 Foes FXR with Ti curnutt shock. Any good/bad/indifferent feelings?

Intended use: hard trail riding with moderate DH every so often.

Also, it's got 1" shorter chain stays than my current bike. What's the
implication of that? Easier manuals? Less high speed stability?

There's a guy who wants to trade frame for frame, my joker for an 03
FXR. Whaddayouguysthink?

TIA, Bruce

Yow! Watch out for those trades if he's not local. Go through a
neutral LBS willing to handle the shipping and receiving for a fee of
course.

If you want something a bit lighter but with more travel for a bit more
aggresive trail riding then yes, I would take the Foes over the Ellsworth.

Who is this 'guy'. Maybe you should use a Escrow service of some sort.

Escrow services can be 100% phoney criminal fly-by-night scams. Make
damn sure it is legit. Somebody attempted to scam me less than 2 weeks
ago with a phoney escrow service. If you feel lucky about whatever it
may do to your computer, go to www.baynestrading.net to see an escrow
scam in action.

I'd go with escrow.com, mostly because they are the ones eBay recommends
(which would hopefully be a sign of legitimacy).
For something like this you'd definitely want to go with a known service. If
a seller won't use a service you're both comfortable with then pass on the
deal!

Matt (they've tried but I haven't been scammed yet)

Here's the one I'm looking at:

Make him cough up an extra $25 for using All Those Capital Letters!

and I giving up this:

Personally, I'd go for it.

The Curnutt is the best rear shock that I've
ridden (even better than the Fox DHX 5.0 that I
just started riding).

If you get a Foes, you're going to need to get a
Titec Knock Scoper or similar due to the
interupted seat tube.

I'm in the Bay Area if you need someone to eyeball
it (assuming the guy isn't really far away).

Hmm, yes, I see what you mean. No biggie, I can live with that.

Thanks for the offer.
It looks like it's going to happen, so if you really don't mind I'd sure
appreciate a 2nd pair impartial of eyeballs.
I'll find out the exact location.

What are you thinking!!! Jump on it... but I would first shoot the pic o=
f =

the dent over to Foes just to make sure.

Assuming Foes says it isn't too much to worry about, do it. And I would =
=

take Pete up on his very generous offer. Get that dudes home addy.

I've seen lonewolfe on RM before, but I really don't remember much about=
=

him. Search his previous postings to get an feel for him. Also, double =

check the Bad Seller section (just in case). You may learn a litte histo=
ry =

about that frame also. But if he coughs up his home addy without =

flinching, he's probably legit.

That's a kick ass frame... I think you'd do well with it. There's a lot =
of =

SPV shock manufacturers these days, but only one true master - Curnutt

Too bad it's not a small; I'd snatched it before you even knew what =

happened :-) Now, if only I could find a XTD for dirt cheap.

I've had my 03 FXR for a while now, here's what I've noticed.
The 03 rear triangle doesn't have a huge amount of rear tyre
clearance. It's not the width, it's the height of the tyre that is
resricted by the yoke, so if you're planning to put monster tyres on
it try before you buy.
With a 5 inch fork like my Talas the head angle is very XCish, which I
like, as my Loco previously was overly slack with 5 inches up front. I
think the frame was designed more with a 6 inch fork in mind, I
usually see them with Shermans mounted up.
For some reason I smack the pedals on rocks a lot on this bike, the BB
isn't low and the rear sag is set right, so I can't really explain it
other than that the rear is pretty active.
It doesn't bob at all but the frame is much heavier than they say.
Mine came in at 30 lb with a lightweight XC build.
Basically add a couple of pounds to what you figure.

its a goood ride though.

Cheers

G
