I was burning along on my bike today, enjoying the quietness of the
local bush on a Christmas eve, when in the distance I spotted a
suspiciously long and slender stick on the road. Could it be.. **** it
is!! I was just about to run over a dark dugite about 1.5 metres long.
It was too late to brake or swerve so I did a bunnyhop over the top of
it. As I flew over it it whipped back towards me as if to strike me. I
don't know if it got hit or I hit it but I'm pretty sure we both
missed each other. For a few minutes after that every twig on the road
looked like another snake. Then I remembered I was carrying my digital
camera with me, but it would be long gone by now. This was the second
time I've bunny hopped a snake. Both times I've been in the bush by
myself. The other time I did it the snake pulled it's head back
quickly as if it was a stretched rubber band that was suddenly
released.

Oh, I thought you were going to tell us an OT story about a member of
that Aussie band from the early 80s...

The most experience I had with snakes was along the Southern Expressway
Bikeway (SA).
One Spring afternoon in 2002, from Marion (suburb) to McLarenVale and return.

Saw 4 brown snakes on the way down, and 2 on the way back.
The first was only small, about 1 mtr, and was happy to be on the
(semi-sealed) bikeway.
I got off the bike and waited for it to decide to move off the track.

The fourth one was bigger, about 1.5-2mtr and was pale/cream; probably
just molted.
Moved fast though, from one side of the track to the other just before I
got there.

The fifth one was a monster, about 2mtr. It moved quickly across the
track but it's tail end was still on the track while it's head was
moving off the other side. I was going too fast to even slow down, and
it readed-up as I tried to sort of bunny-hop over it (on a roadbike).

On the same track this year (autumn) I saw a rather large brown dog-turd
on the edge of the bikeway near O'Halloran Hill. Then the dog-turd
uncoiled and moved off to bushes on the left.

Someone should put up signage.

---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
The Dugites were quite good I thought.
One of the first Australian bands to use a Fairlight CMI.
I may still have a cassette tape somewhere.
I think one of them was/became a lawyer?

I think you meant "probably just *moulted*?
uNLESS (oops, Caps Lock) you meant it just became a milkshake additive,
in which case it just "malted"?

"It's" means "it is". "... but it is tail end..." doesn't make any
sense.

On commuter rides a only a week apart last Feb, 2003, I twice saw Brown
Snakes on the Merri Creek (Northern Melbourne) path. I then
subsiquently screeched the cantilevers for months afterwards for sticks,
brown plastic bags, and shadows...

Someone should put up signage.

"Warning: snakes, snake-like inanimate (including poo) objects, and 80s
band nostalgia frequently occur in this area"?

I still have my cassette with "October" on one side and "War" on the
other side...

I thought either:
- The Models (have you read James Freud's book? It's funny, sad and
touching... and makes you wonder about whether you should have that next
beer...) with "I Hear Motion",
or
- Iva Davies (where is he now?) + Flowers/Icehouse
were the first Oz bands to do the Fairlight CMI thing.

Hmmm. Best not to mention Electric Pandas, Do-Re-Mi, Dynamic Hypnotics,
or Big Pig here...

Chris (and F. the S.M.B.) are you reading this?

I think one of them was/became a lawyer?

Umm... what a naughty, naughty thing to become... (tee-hee)

Yeah, remember a couple of good tunes from them via Countdown 1979/80
ie: "South Pacific, it's terrific, French don't care.." and the one w
don't really want to remember that went like, "In your car, car, car
car, in your car, car, car, car..

- Iva Davies (where is he now?) + Flowers/Icehouse were the first O

Abely assisted with composing the stirring soundtrack to the latest Rus
flick "Master & Commander" amongst many other things. Still quite a bus
man. The Takeaways used a CMI too

Q: What's long, brown, and sticky
R: A stick

all: a mainlander jok
Q: what passes over there as a drinkable beer
R: Foster

Just for the record, attempting to get this thread back on track, as a
pedestrian, I saw two snakes today in inner suburbs of Melbourne. Both
high-tailed it back into the undergrowth.

I know the Southern Veloway / Willunga Rail Trail well. The asphalt on
this track is between 3.5 metres and 4.0 metres wide. If the snake you
saw, was indeed, longer than the track is wide, I think you were lucky
enough to see the rare and very shy Southern Montypythonoides.

ps: I originally posted this on the wrong thread from the original
message, then canceled it. It may still appear for you, gentle reader,
as a reply to Steve Bitbucket's rather more sensible post. Apologies
