Shimano Compact Crankset
I saw the prototype compact crankset, which Shimano is planning to
release in early January of 2006. It looks similar to the Dura Ace crankset with the outter bearings. The chainrings even mirrored the Dura Ace chainrings. In fact, you could call it a baby versin of the Dura Ace crankset. The chainrings made it look very chunky. The representative said it would retail around $290.00. Claude |

Yeah, I saw the same crank at the SF Gran Prix bike expo. Not a very
attractive crank, but I bet Shimano sells a ton of them. In contrast, Campy's new 110bcd Centaur silver crank is very pretty and with a "retail" price of $149, it should also sell very well too: https://secure3.nexternal.com/shared...ideJ ava=True |

Yeah, I saw the same crank at the SF Gran Prix bike expo. Not a very
attractive crank, but I bet Shimano sells a ton of them. It's possible that Shimano may have blown it with their compact crank, in two ways. First, it's quite late to the party. And second, they got the bugs out of their high-end triples, such that both the DuraAce & Ultegra 52/39/30 combos work phenomenally well. There's really no downside, apart from a bit of extra weight. If Shimano really wanted to succeed with compact cranks (and, for that matter, doubles in general), they'd get a clue and come out with a 12-29 10-spd cassette. C'mon, there's *10* cogs back there, it's not like giving us a 29t is going to space them too far apart. --Mike-- Chain Reaction Bicycles www.ChainReactionBicycles.com |

The representative said it would retail around $290.00. That's just the first step in migrating the current DA tech down to the lower groups. Shimano can be expected to continue this trend, since it promises to eventually do away with the cheap generic BB for a few years while the patents on the outboard bearing design are still alive. Of course, that latter factor doesn't obtain if enough folks simply continue to use cranks that take a square taper, which I predict will remain the more common design by far. If Shimano converts enough of their line to this style of setup, I see a much brighter future for Campy and the other square-taper crank makers. -- Typoes are a feature, not a bug.
