Shimano Compact Crankset
Mike Jacoubowsky wrote: Yeah, I saw the same crank at the SF Gran Prix bike expo. Not a very attractive crank, but I bet Shimano sells a ton of them. It's possible that Shimano may have blown it with their compact crank, in two ways. First, it's quite late to the party. And second, they got the bugs out of their high-end triples, such that both the DuraAce & Ultegra 52/39/30 combos work phenomenally well. There's really no downside, apart from a bit of extra weight. If Shimano really wanted to succeed with compact cranks (and, for that matter, doubles in general), they'd get a clue and come out with a 12-29 10-spd cassette. C'mon, there's *10* cogs back there, it's not like giving us a 29t is going to space them too far apart. --Mike-- Chain Reaction Bicycles www.ChainReactionBicycles.com Since shimano and evidently, Trek, seem concerned about the front der being exceeded by one tooth of capacity(why the 'Bontrager compacts are 50-36, not 34),is shimano gonna have a 'compact' front der. In my experience, it certainly is not needed...a double works just fine. And I read that the DA 10s triple is 53/40/30(???) and still with that goofy propriatary middle ring/small ring BCD. |

It looks nice in th picture. However, when you examine it in your
hands, it simply looks like unattractive. I think it's mostly due the outter chanring. I wish they had used chainrings similar to those of the Ultegra group. It would have made it far prettier. The price tag of $290 is fairly high to me. With all the carbon cranksets price relative to that, I don't know if they'll sell. I sure see a lot of FSA & Truvativ carbon cranksets here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Claude |

Okay, and a little ugly, but I don't expect functional stuff to be artistic and pleasing; if it does the job, I can overlook a lot. But for $290, I think I can overlook this crankset, too. -- Typoes are a feature, not a bug. Some gardening required to reply via email. Words processed in a facility that contains nuts. |

I understood that the earlier Campagnolo compact cranksets were proprietary because they were Chorus or Record and thus had one of the chainring bolts behind the crankarm and this in a somehow different location relative to the others. In addition to the Centaur crankset, there will also be compact cranksets in the Mirage and Veloce ranges, so the selection is now good. -as |

Find out the gears you're most comfortable with. As it turned out for me, if I were to purchase the 50/34 compact crank, I would be mostly in my 50t and using only the 34t for climbing. Also the 12-23 or 11-23 would work best in using the compact. During the winter I use a Campagnolo racing triple crank 170mm 52/42/30. In the spring I switch over to the Campagnolo double 172.5mm 53/39 with a 12-27 9sp.and use it through the spring, summer and fall. Both Campagnolo cranks take the 111mm bottom bracket. This combination seems the most useful for me. Of course you'll have to decide what works best for you. Sheldon's gear calculator was very helpful in my decision. http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gears/ -tom |
