Worth taking a bike to Melbourne for a week?
thanks guys. well I'm here and I have my bike. I found the river oka this morning then went riding along next to it. I didn't make it t beach road though. I think I may have been following the river to closely as I was riding over boardwoarks and weaving my way aroun boathouses and docks. I'll give it another go tomorrow morning, migh try the other side of the river -- xisle |

No, you got it right, it's just that through the Southbank section you either dodge the milling hordes or simply give up on the idea of following the river along that section. -- Resound |

The boardwalk is in front of Jeff's Shed (Melbourne Exhibition Centre). If you'd gone left at Jeff's Shed, and down Spencer St for a couple of hundred metres you could have followed the trail alongside the 109 tram route to the coast, then down that trail to Beach Rd. There's litterally hundreds of KMs of linked car-free trails along Melbourne's rivers, creeks, coast (bay), and old railways. Their main problems are a few short gaps, rarely more than a KM, and poor signage where they meet. Once you know your way around though, it's possible to travel large distances across Melbourne - not directly, but much nicer and relaxing than roads. If signage was improved and then maintained they'd get a lot more use than from just regular users. |
