Default Freewheel/chain

I want to replace my block and chain. On pension now so money is
tight, last years saw the purchase of a triple chainset so new block
and chain are lined up for the coming Spring. Have been looking at the
online stores and frankly there is so much modern stuff I am totally
lost. It was simple in my day, buy new block, buy new chain and there
wasn't the complexity that there is now.

So here is the question - can anyone point me to a 6 speed freewheel
block and the appropriate chain that will run on a 48/38/28?

Cheers.

The cheapest 6 speed freewheel I could find was £4.99 for a shimano
megarange at
http://www.bikecare.co.uk/clearance.html

Wiggle have other 6 speeds from £10 to £14 and have LG-50 7/8 speed chain
for £5.99 (which will fit just fine, it's just a little narrower on the
outside) or the connex 800 chain which is supposed to outlast other chains
of the same price by a factor of three for £7.99

Hope this helps

Tom

A 7, 8 or 9 speed chain has the same internal width as a 6 speed and will
work perfectly well. Plenty of six speed blocks still around, ask in
your LBS.

Morning had broken, and there was nothing left for us to do
but pick up the pieces.

Any idea if a megarange block would fit on an old Raleigh Banana with Sachs
derailleurs?

Will it? A 9 speed chain is a lot narrower than 6 speed even if it has the
same pitch. Not saying you are wrong, just that I'd be wary myself.

I used to use SRAM 6, 7 ,8 speed chain when I use 6 speed equipment, on
my 7 speed bike I still do. Couldn't see the point of paying more for 9
speed stuff that *might* not work.

Should have said "work" rather than "fit"...

From what I've read (I've not measured), internal width is similar and
compatible, but still I would get an 8-speed chain because they're cheaper
and the extra overall width might make it shift better.

You may have problems if the derailleur doesn't have a long cage.

What ratio? Some are hard to find now.

SRAM PC58 from Chain Reaction or Wiggle

Or http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/sear...0&satitle=pc41
(Seller is incorrect to state 9-speed compatible)
