Default tiagra 9 shifters w dura ace 6 derailleur?

I'd like to use an older but good condition dura ace 7400 rear
derailleur. Can I make it work with the alternate cable position?
Also have a 7401 derailleur; would that be any better?

It'll work fine with an 8-speed cassette. If you use the "Hubbub"
cable routing, you can use 9 cogs of a 10-speed cassette.

If it was me, I'd go 8-speed.

Thanks. 8 sounds good to me. With the normal cable routing, or with
the alternate one, ie above the bolt vs below?

RD-7400 didn't have the slot for above the bolt - that was added on
RD-7700 to maintain compatibility with SL-740x and ST-740x.

So, normal routing, behind the bolt.
