Milestone Day for ARBR Arrives!
"Sunset Fanatic" wrote in message oups.com... Edward Dolan wrote: ... My dreams all seem to be nightmares. I had one the other night about Tom Sherman returning to this newsgroup to plague me once again, and lo and behold, he is back. Same old, same old (with footnotes and all), but now he is calling himself something to do with a sunset. He is now apparently living in a place called the Fox Valley, a distant suburb of Chicago.... On topic content: The proper name of the bike is "Earth Cycles Sunset Lowracer [TM]"; therefore "sunset" should be capitalized to "Sunset" in this context. The rest of the world is not enamored of the Sunset like you are. Therefore, you have created confusion where none existed before. Off topic content: The municipality I am residing in was established well before the area between it and the City of Chicago was developed for residential and commercial purposes. Therefore, it is not a suburb in the pejorative sense of the term, but a long established independent city that has been encroached upon by urban sprawl. Well, Hells Bells, is that not the case everywhere. Let's face it. You are no more living in an independent community than you were when you were living on the outskirts of the Quad Cities. You are doomed to live your life in suburbia because that is where all the growth in the country is. I even consider the Quad Cities to be essentially tied into Chicago as far as the economics are concerned. If you would like to live in an independent community, you would have to relocate to the boondocks and make the big sacrifice in your income. To get away from suburbia you would have to live in a small town far removed from any metro. Even medium size cities have suburbs these days. -- Ed Dolan the Great - Minnesota aka Saint Edward the Great - Order of the Perpetual Sorrows - Minnesota |

Sunset Lowracers (was: Milestone Day for ARBR Arrives!)

Earth Cycles was a very small manufacturer that hardly knew what they were doing half the time. Most members of this group will not know what you are talking about when you mention the Sunset and Earth Cycles. Earth Cycles was a very prickly manufacturer located near St. Paul and was not liked by many in this state. I find your championing of this bike manufacturer and his Sunset very strange. -- Ed Dolan the Great - Minnesota aka Saint Edward the Great - Order of the Perpetual Sorrows - Minnesota |

I have only met Shean Bjoralt once, but I gained a rather different impression that what Ed Dolan reputes. Other's have stated both privately and public ally that they were saddened by the business failure of Earth Cycles. Once the bicycle leaves than manufacturer, its qualities are independent of the manufacturer. Should we destroy all copies of Wagner's musical scores because of his bigotry and numerous failings as a person? Would that action benefit the human race in any way - or can we appreciate something for its intrinsic value independent of its creator? -- Tom Sherman - Fox River Valley |

Other's have stated both privately and public ally that they were saddened by the business failure of Earth Cycles. That man had no business sense at all. He over priced his bikes and would not make himself available to his customers. But mostly, I do not like small manufacturers no matter how precious they think themselves to be. RANS was the best thing that ever happened to the recumbent world. I would never condemn Wagner as a composer, but that would not prevent me from condemning him as a man. I always remember what the great conductor Toscanini said about Richard Strauss who stayed in Germany and prospered in the Third Reich. He said I take my hat off to the composer, but I put my hat back on my head for the man. Like Toscanini, I can separate the art from the man. I miss Toscanini. I grew up listening to all his performances of the standard symphonic repertoire and there is no one today who does it like he did. His tempos were always just right and his orchestral balance and dynamics were also just right. Those who think Bernstein was a great conductor do not know what they are talking about. God, do I ever hate conductors who take liberties with tempos. -- Ed Dolan the Great - Minnesota aka Saint Edward the Great - Order of the Perpetual Sorrows - Minnesota |

I wonder if Ed Dolan has ever closely examined a Sunset or Dragonflyer? Both are fairly "complex" in terms of number of operations to make the frames, including numerous braze-ons, mandrel bent tubing, and inserts for the sliding boom (and frame on the Sunset). They included custom welded racks and drive train parts. Some of the parts used were not exactly inexpensive [1]. The seats probably took more time than the frame to fabricate. I am not surprised that Earth Cycles did not make much, if any profit at the prices they charged. One could argue that the designs should have been simpler, but then they would lose much, like the wide range gearing and excellent shifting of the Sunset or the "pogo" free suspension of the Dragonflyer, both due to the use of the mid-drive gearing step-up jackshaft. RANS was the best thing that ever happened to the recumbent world.... If you want a well designed and well made recumbent bicycle that is an excellent value for the money, you will not go wrong with anything that RANS sells. However, they are not special in the way the Sunset and Dragonflyer are. The Sunset is unique in many ways, and there was neither a comparable predecessor nor has there been a successor. I strongly recommend owning more than one Sunset, so one always has one in reserve. [1] The two custom Phil Wood hubs on the Dragonflyer or the front custom Phil Wood and standard rear Phil Wood hub on a Sunset were likely more than $500 wholesale. -- Tom Sherman - Fox River Valley |
