looks to be mounted to a handy bracket on that bike.

I just mounted a Greenfield to that 60s folder...with a kickstand
plate. Looks great and makes me wonder why why why American casual
bikes don't come with these any more. Especially with the trend to top
swing mechs. It wouldn't cost much. I know--crazy talk!

The last casual bike I bought, a couple of weeks ago, did come with a
kickstand, and even had the mount built into the frame so no top plate
was needed.

A fair number of low-end casual bikes do come with kickstands. Many
even have a threaded boss on the chainstay bridge to mount one. It's
only fancier bikes that don't have a kickstand. Mostly that's because
the people who sell them have an irrational fear of practical bikes.

Oy, I was at the LBS today picking up that kickstand when an LHT and
its owner walked in. I immediately complimented the owner on a smart
choice and we got to jammin about how nice a spec it is, and also what
a bit of a chore the build was--and a shop employee, whose even
initial I won't give, gives the "well--you should have ordered it from
the LBS guilt trip" BS. And this is where it goes into practical
bikes--I sort of bit my tongue--but I wanted to scream--if you guys
would ****ing stocking a normal useful bike like a Surly LHT that's
about the most "universal" thing out there that's high quality, then
folks wouldn't be so apt to go online.

Most folks don't see a bike online and then think, "OK, that's great,
let's see if my LBS can get it". They see that the LBS doesn't get it,
have trouble assembling it, then bring it to the LBS for assembling--
which gives the LBS their bread and butter in profit--wrenching. The
last thing folks need is guilt thrown towards them in buying a product
online that a local bike shop didn't find value showing on the sales
floor-though it's quite popular.

What's stopping a Kona/Cannondale dealer from showing Surlys on the
floor? Anything? Sales agreements? Sheer knuckleheadness? It just
seems stupid to not have five built Cross-Checks and a couple 54-58
LHTs on the floor considering bike fashion these days, but the LBS, as
cooler as they are compared to the rest of the city's LBS's (and
that's a LOT cooler), ain't doing it.

To their credit--they do have a 56cm Honky Tonk in the window. Hot
dang is it 1988 all the time on future steroids. I want.. :-D

I'm at Interbike today, and I saw several LHTs scattered around
different booths. Also the new Civia line from QBP. It's frustrating
for Surly and Civia and the like that they can't get the LBS's to
stock their products, but they said that the problem is that so many
shops are "tied" shops and can't stock any bicycles from other
manufacturers, and even can't stock accessories that their "tied"
manufacturer markets, even when the "tied" accessories are really bad.
At least Surly is willing to sell through other channels, though that
may also be why more shops are not carrying them.

Interesting show, very different than the Taipei International Cycle
Show. A ridiculous number of electric bicycles, that no one is buying.
A large number of very cool roadsters, but alas the roadster is now a
$1000+ boutique item.

I'll post photos of the show tomorrow. Lots of kickstands. Lots of new
racks. Lots of new lights. Even Bor Yueh was here!

A roadster should be inexpensive enough to leave locked up outside the shop.

That sounds like a problem that will resolve itself in due course, to
the disadvantage of the overreaching manufacturers.

The two '00s Cannondale touring bikes I have owned came with welded-in
kickstand plates. The '80s and '90s Cannondales I have owned were not
so equipped. So at least that one manufacturer seems to be getting it
more right now than in the past.
