Apparently he was in Pitlochry buying 1000 carpet tacks a couple of
days before (duh!) and is a personal injury lawyer. His website has, I
was told, been clogged by hundreds of "enquiries" from cyclists! Also
the local police were not exactly well disposed to him as their
motorcycle escorts were of course the first to hit the tacks and had
to be taken back on a trailer!

He should clearly plead not guilty on the grounds of insanity!

Nick Maclaren.

Friend of mine rode in the event, although thankfully wasn't
punctured. Has anyoneany idea of this nutjob's motives?

If it gets to a trial then there will presumably some sort of
defence, which will be reported. Until then we can only guess and
the guess seems to be that he objected to the roads being closed. Of
course his alleged actions presumably led to the roads being closed
for longer then they would have been...

But not in his back yard...?

Ah, one of the complaints of the locals was that closing the roads
made it impossible to get to church. Next year if he doesn't want the
event he should offer to pay the 200,000 quid raised for cancer
charity out of his own pocket or risk eternal damnation

Now lets see.

Does holding the race mean that roads have to be closed to all
traffic?

Is there slim possibility that the local people will be inconvenienced
by this action?

Is it possible that the local people do not give two chuffs about
cycling?

Is it possible that the local people do not want the race.

Now your turn - analyse the above and produce a conclusion.

In the UK in 2007
There were 30,959 pedestrians injured in traffice accidents
There were 16,415 cyclists injured in traffic accidents

I wonder what the relative numbers of pedestrians and cyclists
in the UK is?

It looks like cycling is much more dangerous than being a pedestrian.

This isn't the only event which causes roads to be closed, just the
only cycling one. I wonder if the antis (a small but vocal group I
gather [1]) would object as strongly to the closure of the same
roads for a run.

Yes, probably. Running race organisers are finding it harder and harder
to get roads closed.

I think it would be a mistake to see this as an anti-cyclist attitude:
it's more an
anti-anything-that-inconveniences-me-even-for-an-hour-on-one-day-of-the-year
attitude.
