I have shimano 9 speed Dura ace STI shifters which are broken for the
second time (right shifter will not downshift). The first time it was
covered by warranty, but now I am afraid I have to buy another one.
They can't be repaired. A new one is $270. Can you believe a
replacement 10 speed dura ace STI shifters cost $430?
When my campy shifter broke my LBS charged $30 for a new spring and it
was fixed. Campy costs alittle more up front, but they aren't
disposable like shimano and are cheaper to maintain if you plan on
keeping your bike for a few years.

You're preaching to the choir. As a last resort, have you tried flushing
with WD-40?

Yknow, really a lot of the time, STI/rapidfire failures are all about
one of the tiny springs being broken. They're not nearly as mysterious
inside, nor as difficult to deal disassemble/reassemble, as they're
made out to be. If it was mine I wouldn't proclaim it fully dead until
I understood what was wrong with it.

Having just built up a bike and opting to stay 9-speed since I already had
the drivetrain (sans shifters and FD), I think you can find 10-speed DA for
a lot less than $430. (I have a triple so stayed 9 speed since 10 is double
only still {?}, but Performance had '06 DA STIs on sale for LESS than I paid
to order DA-9s {$299 + tax}.) Shop around.

cassette, rear derailleur, etc. etc. etc" S.

A buddy of mine crashed and ruined his right brifter. He got a new
Tiagra replacement. No need to buy 2. The newish Tiagra has the same
form as the 9 speed DA, so apart from the finish, he couldn't tell the
difference. I'll bet a Tiagra one is about $80.

9s DA down tube shifters can be had for less than $60 new from Nashbar,
iirc. Barcons probably aren't much more expensive.

Or maybe you can go for the Lance Armstrong look (yes, I know it's your
RIGHT lever ):

Hmmmm-the choir, like the next gent said. BUT material for material,
like aluminum-Centaur-costs WAY less than Ultegra, Even Veloce, same
innards is WAY less than even Tiagra or 105.

OEM and what people see in most bike shops means most riders know
little to nothing of Campagnolo, along with most bike shop owners,
service managers and wrenches in general. Much like PC and Mac
computers-holy ****e!!! I said it!!

SO, my suggestion is buy a set of ERGO 10s and a Campagnolo rear
derailleur. It will work fine and dandy with shimano 9s or 10s...

10s DA triple came out in September, 2005.

Except all you would have needed is the crank-no derailleurs needed for
a compact crank.

Purchase a Campy shifter and match it to your drivetrain with a shiftmate

http://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=5144
$430.99 Dura Ace 10 speed.

http://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=5144
$279.98 Record 10 speed.

And I bought the Record from Performance for $270 a few weeks ago.

Why do people continue to propogate this myth that Campagnolo costs
more than Shimano?
