Cycling up 80% in London but accident rates have sharply declined.

Are you basing that "accident" assertion on the "official" police casualty
statistics, have you made it up yourself, or do you actually have a
/reliable/ source for it?

Do you have stats that refute it?

First it was hug a hoodie - now Cameron's joined the Lycra louts

David Cameron has been accused of joining cycling's growing army of
'Lycra louts' who openly flout the rules of the road after he was
snapped riding through a red light.

The Tory leader, who sparked controversy last year with his 'hug a
hoodie' speech, breached the Highway Code as he cycled home through
London's Notting Hill. And although he had a helmet with him, Mr
Cameron decided not to wear it - leaving it dangling from his
handlebars.

The episode comes amid growing tension on the capital's streets
between law-abiding motorists and a hard core of cyclists who
routinely ride on pavements, ignore lights and signs and weave
dangerously through traffic.

...

In pictures taken on Wednesday evening in Portobello Road, Mr Cameron
approaches the crossroads at Westbourne Park Road with the lights
signalling him to stop. Then he edges across the white line, despite
the red light and, finally, crosses the yellow-box junction with the
lights still on red.

Hugh Bladon, of the Association of British Drivers, said: 'All
cyclists must obey the rules of the road. It does not matter who they
are.'

But a Conservative spokesman commented: 'Mr Cameron was riding
extremely carefully.'

I've always wondered why he carries a helmet dangling from his
bars. Any clues?

In case he sees a photographer ;-)

Probably as good a place as any for it. See discussion here in the
past.

Well, helmets are obviously so good that either:

a) just being near one is enough to benefit from their protective
qualities; or
b) it is to protect certain parts of the bike from damage in the event
of an accident (Headline: "Helmet saved my bike's life!").

Or maybe not.

I wonder if this is a vote against helmet wearing.
Dangling it from his handle bars is more obvious than
simply not wearing one.

As I saw him on the news (I think) setting off wearing a helmet then
I think that is probably the reason.

Perhaps there was a section of his journey where a helmet
might be useful, such as an off-road path with lots of
overhanging branches or the possibilty of low speed
falls.
Or maybe he was planning to stop by the golf course
on the way home and watch Tiger Woods in action.

They've done this before too:

Cyclist deaths rise by 10 per cent
Last updated at 22:13pm on 29th June 2006

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/liv...#StartComments

An increase in of 10% no matter how upsetting is simply in line with
the increased use of cycles last year.

Cyclist's deaths up 10%, and not a word about the 80% increase in
cycling in London over the last 5 years.

Do the math, in real terms cycling's much safer, and, as Howard points
out:

To understand the rise in cyclist fatalities just look at the increase
in inconsiderate and aggressive driving, encouraged by endless anti-
cyclist propaganda in the press. In addition the majority of drivers
habitually speed, many use hand held mobile phones, drink and drug
driving is on the increase and it is the norm to overtake cyclists at
speed with inches to spare and to bully past cyclists at narrow 'pinch
points'.

It is also common for drivers to overtake a cyclist and then
immediately turn left across their path. To blame cyclists is a
nothing but a sick joke when every week one reads of cyclists being
killed by uninsured, unlicensed and reckless drivers, or by motorists
driving with unroadworthy vehicles. (As in the case of the driver who
killed the 4 cyclists in Rhyl). The culpability of drivers is clear
when nationally in 17% of crashes where a cyclist is killed or injured
the driver 'does a runner': the figure for places such as Hull and
Liverpool is over 50%!

As I understand it he only started dangling one from the handlebars,
most of the time, relatively recently, when the helmet lobby had a
go at him.
