Default Government wants lower speed limits.

And so do I but I bet the motorists who plaster this newsgroup don't
though. They just want the freedom to drive as fast and as dangerously
as possible, at their own discretion of course. Anyway, fair play to
HMG for squaring up to these killers and polluters for once.

"New advice to councils to cut the speed limit on roads with accident
blackspots is being published by the government.

Ministers want the national speed limit of 60mph lowered to 50mph on
selected main roads in rural areas.

They are advising local authorities to introduce gradually 20mph zones
in all residential areas and near schools.

The government says more ambitious targets are needed for reducing
deaths as it enters the final year of its decade-long road safety
strategy.

More than 32,000 people have died on British roads in the past 10
years but the country's record has improved.

The government's target of cutting deaths and serious injuries by 40%
by the end of 2010 has already been met but ministers are planning
more ambitious goals..."

There is a brilliant crash map and database here!

According to the BBC's road deaths map

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8401344.stm

there don't appear to have been *any* deaths inside Leicester's ring
road in the last decade, yet the city council should now reduce the
speed limit on all residential streets therein?

It would be far cheaper to /increase/ the speed limit on motorways to
100, and change the unit of speed from mph to km/h.

Where is this squaring up, I haven't noticed any.

Advice is just that, Advice.

Ministers want the national speed limit of 60mph lowered to 50mph on

If necessary, so what?

They are advising local authorities to introduce gradually 20mph zones
in all residential areas and near schools.

Good idea.(I wonder if cyclists will bother observing it).

Claptrap (Very common in this cyclist infested group).

More than 32,000 people have died on British roads in the past 10
years but the country's record has improved.

Without the road system what would life be like? Compared to the
amount of journies daily that's a vanishingly small amount of deaths.

How many ministers? Who are they.

A driving licence is a licence to kill and a vital necessity for the commerce that feeds you daily.

My mistake, it doesn't show all years' deaths at once, only individual
years; None last year though.

Apart from the Royal Parks, compliance with the speed limit for
cyclists by cyclists is 100%.

The government says more ambitious targets are needed for reducing deaths

They should start by creating an off-road cycle network linking all towns
and villages. Where off-road cycling is available, the majority of people
cycle. Their analysis is absurdly based on car use that is only necessary
because it is too dangerous to cycle on-road.

Safety and sustainability objectives should be pursued in parallel.

They are advising local authorities to introduce gradually 20mph zones in
all residential areas and near schools.

Make all the minor yellow and white roads 20mph, this would discourage their
use as rat runs, they could then form the basis of a cycle network.

On Wednesday they will issue guidance to councils urging blanket speed
limits of 50mph, rather than 60mph, on rural single-carriageway A roads
with a history of accidents.

Make that all of them.

Does anyone know which care home Doug has absconded from? I want to let
them know that his incontinence bag needs changing.
