Petacchi did something that no one else has *ever* done.

Uh, so did Bettini.

Dumbass -
2002, that was AGR and Lombardia.

BTW I am surprised you didn't bring up Bartoli should be grareful to
Ballerini for the recent win. Bartoli and Rebellin were the only
favorites without jetlag.

BTW 2 I agree with Tosi's contribution, but from a Belgian perspective I
must nominate Verbrugghe as our equivalent to DiLuca (his aims for 2003
were winning LBL, Giro podium and Tour Top 10).

You are correct, I mistyped.

It's still not a comeback.

My aims for 2003 were winning the Nobel Peace Prize, a MacArthur genius
grant, and a three-way with Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts. Oh well,
maybe the the Nobel and MacArthur will happen next year.

Most disappointing: One name - Cipollini, who hardly bothered to
show up and race this year after getting the record for Giro stage
wins...

He very nearly won Milano Sanremo - but that was many months ago, and
maybe people have forgotten... Not that he had a stellar season, but
the guy's old, and got snubbed again by the TdF organizers, which
seems to have stopped him cold.

Agree about Van Petegem. Rider of the Year is a debate between Bettini,
Petacchi and Van Petegem. Vino was very consistent, but his wins didn't make
the same impression of the other three. I leave him out.

Vino was top from March till august. He won 2 HC races (Paris Nice and
Switserland) plus a WC-stage, a tour stage and ended 3rd overall.
What PVP showed in April was huge, especially because he won the two
most famous classics but I consider the results of Vino much higher.
And the way Vino won the Tour od Switserland in the last TT and the
Gold Race on the Cauberg was pretty impressive too.

I could place PVP in third instead of Petacchi, especially after his
3rd place in Hamilton, but Vino stands above. I don't understand
quite well why the achievements of Vino are toned down. He rode from
the spring till
the summer, almost like they used to do in the goold old time.

It's a shame that this was such a fantastic year for several riders that
PVPs spring classics campaign gets completely forgotten.
