Apologies for two replies to this but I just turned the page
in my newspaper to find Senator Johnson's item today:

https://www.wsj.com/articles/failed-...re-11556232571

He cites 'Yale researchers' [unnamed] who estimate a range
of 16 to 29 million but he, and they, note the number is not
actually known.

16 and 29 million immigrants equals 4.85% and 8.8% of the 330 million USA population. OK on the 16 million. That is 1 in 20 people I see is an immigrant. Seems a bit high, but maybe, maybe. The 29 million is 1 in 11 people is an immigrant. Very high. Is 1 in 11 of the people walking in to your shop an immigrant? Is 1 in 11 customers at the grocery store an immigrant?

Which is exactly why you and I found a search for good
numbers difficult. You just did it yourself, conflated
immigration with illegal aliens, two utterly different
things comprising two very different sorts of people with
often radically different goals, behavior and standards.

Remember the immigrant citizen, Cpl Singh?
https://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2018...islaus-county/

Murdered by a multiple felon illegal and his illegal
criminal associates, members of Sureno.

Mr Singh followed the rules, studied for his naturalization,
became an American citizen like us, paid his taxes, started

idiot 'sanctuary' abetting. Or as Ms Pelosi said of MS-13,
'a child of God'.

Yes some illegal immigrants kill other people. Just like the 19 year old white Caucasian 19 year old teenager killed one woman and injured three in the Jewish synagogue in California on Saturday. Of course he was an American citizen. And the Las Vegas concert killer a year or two or three ago who murdered 50 or so people from his hotel room was an American. Or the Australian man who killed 50 people in the mosque in New Zealand recently. Killers, murderers, don't fit into orderly racial, national, religious boxes. They come from every category.

To generalize a bit: Is there a name for the logical fallacy or debate technique
in which the speaker describes a single unusual incident as false evidence of a
purportedly widespread trend?

It's a very common trick.

This is not that. Angel Parents are thousands of men & women

I would guess that at least 1 in 4 customers that I see when grocery
shopping are immigrants. Quite likely more.

If you live in N. America the discussion of "immigrants" is sort of
meaningless as just about everyone, except for a small minority of
"Native Americans" is/was an immigrant :-)

Yes, good analogy.
California does not deport illegal alien felons and
sentences are relatively short compared to other States.

Chicago very rarely prosecutes 'felon in possession' or
other firearms charges, even less murder. Politicians or
newspapers can publicize a case here and there, known
locally as a 'heater', but the general run of things is
ineffective.

I don't know and you don't either but that well worn "11
million" number hasn't changed in twenty years. Recent
estimates are in the 25 to 35 million range. Again I don't
know but I'll bet real money that the number is larger than
the 11 million who were here in 1998.

Believe it or not, this is the first time I ever did a Google search on illegal immigration population in the USA. So yes I don't know how correct or not the number is. But I think my 3.33% of the USA population is probably correct. I know everyone on TV and the internet screams their head off about all the illegal immigrants, or just immigrants. But when I go about my normal day, I don't see any. And I doubt you do either in Madison. I live in Des Moines. You in Madison. Des Moines is far and away the biggest city in Iowa. Not sure if Madison or Milwaukee is biggest in Wisconsin. So in the biggest or almost biggest cities in the states, I would think we would see a lot of immigrants. Biggest populations, biggest number of immigrants.

25 to 35 million is 7.6% to 10.6% of the 330 million people in the USA. So 1 in 13 to 1 in 10 people in the USA is an immigrant. Seems really high to me. When you go to stores or the park or downtown or to a restaurant or look at workers in shops, do you see 1 in 10 or 1 in 13 looking like an immigrant? I don't when I go around town.

Depends on your neighborhood. Iowa in particular has seen
mass immigration raids in packing plants in recent years
(over both administrations).

Yep, about 11 years ago in Postville, Iowa the immigration agency arrested 400 immigrants at the meat packing plant. Its close to Wisconsin. But every year or two there is an immigration raid somewhere in Iowa.

I found this quote/news story kind of funny. "Postville's Jews flocked to the synagogue in the wake of news that Sholom Rubashkin, former owner of the local meatpacking plant who was imprisoned after a 2008 immigration raid at his kosher food processor, had been released by President Donald Trump." Apparently Trump thinks the boss who hires the illegal immigrants is innocent. But the illegal immigrants should be whipped, jailed, tortured. Kind of funny, in a sick way.

Well, didn't we hear that Trump's concerns have hired illegal immigrants?

Anyway: By coincidence, I was talking today to a woman who had just
finished interviewing a certain Syrian immigrant - a legal one, I believe.

He's about 50 years old, with a wife and kids. For over 20 years he had
a thriving small business, a nice home, etc. He lost it all in the
conflict, every bit of it. He's here, working in the same general
industry but as little more than a laborer.

He told the local woman that the work his company had done was many
times more intricate than what's being done here, so he's sure he could
do well if only he could get the capital to start his own business. But
since he left behind absolutely everything, he's facing big obstacles.

The woman said she was humbled (and not in the fake sense Oscar winners
use). She said she's used to millenials looking for some easy job that
will satisfy their daydreams and give them a sense of real fulfillment.
This guy just wants a chance to adequately support his family. He's
working and fighting like hell to do that.

One of the many things I like about Thailand. If you shoot someone you
usually get caught and the penalty is usually 20 years in jail with no
parole. One might get a pardon from the king if he has already served
3/4 of his sentence or more but it is very unlikely if the crime was
murder.

As an aside, the police are pressing for the crime of killing someone
in a traffic accident if you had been drinking to be changed to
murder. So far the courts have not allowed it but the police mare
collecting data to present to the court. Given that in the 5 days of
the recent Songkran holidays (traditional New Years) there were 8,383
arrests for traffic violations and of that number 98% were for drunk
driving, perhaps the law will get changed.

Congratulations, instead of feeling sorry and blaming Trump for investing in
underpriced talent, the two of you should have jumped in to invest thousands
of your own dollars in Mr. Syrian's talent, determination, and future
fortune. And of course, let him do work at your own house, yard, or car brakes.

Nope. The person doing the interview works for a midwest city, for an
office that tries to help entrepreneurs and owners of small businesses.
I think it's a worthwhile effort.

I didn't say he was surprised. And he's trying to do better. Why so harsh?

Sounds like he does have what it takes, despite being put through hell.
So why so harsh? Has your life been even rougher? If so, give us your story.

I think it's entirely reasonable to blame Trump for letting his
organizations hire illegal immigrants. That's one of his countless
blatant acts of hypocrisy.

So again: What is your story?

do well if only he could get the capital to start his own business. But
since he left behind absolutely everything, he's facing big obstacles.

Frank, let me guess, you think that Trump reviews and hires every employee at every one of his 200+ businesses.

A Google search says there are about 11 million illegal immigrants in the USA. If there are 330 million people in the US, then illegals are about 3.33% of the total. Not very many. And a large majority of the illegals live in just a few large US cities. DFW, Houston, NY, LA, Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, DC. There are illegals everywhere in the US, but very, very small numbers everywhere but in these few large cities. So the illegals would take one apartment, house out of every thousand or ten thousand.

Nope. But he's at the top of the chain of command for those businesses.
He _could_ make it a strong company policy to never hire anyone who
lacks absolute proof of legality. He could see that message makes its
way down the chain.

And if a lower level manager somehow goofed and hired such a person, he
could probably come up with some very clever way of handling that
situation.

Maybe telling that manager "You're fired"?

If you do not hire illegals in California you cannot have a labor force. One out of every four people is illegal. I hear that it is the same in Florida. My reaction to you would be "you're fired".

Jay doesn't pay attention to the homeless for a good reason - most of them are junkies. In Oakland it is almost impossible to believe that you can be one block from city hall and they are openly selling heroin and cocaine. This is five blocks from the police station. One of the routes I take is directly past the Sheriff's Department. The Sheriffs have to fight their way out into traffic running red lights and I have never seen a single citation issued. NO ONE gets out of the way of an ambulance anymore. They won't even pull over for a cop with his lights and siren on.

If you do not enforce the law it becomes meaningless and it should come as no surprise that people are shot one a day.
