Hit and run cyclist in court
A CYCLIST appeared in court yesterday charged with causing grievous
bodily harm to a child by wanton or furious cycling. The girl was on a pedestrian crossing with an adult when she was knocked down and left unconscious. The cyclist came off his bike but then fled from the scene and turned himself in after a Police appeal Philip Douglas Benwell, 38, who spoke only to confirm his personal details, is accused of causing a collision in Poole on Friday, July 25 this year, which caused the victim life-threatening injuries. He also faced a separate charge of causing grievous bodily harm to the juvenile – who can’t be identified due to a court order – during the incident. http://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/new...ver_collision/ |

No, but the hit-and-run would still be related to driving and therefore on topic in (for example) uk.rec.driving. |

Perhaps he lost concentration for a moment and didn't intend any injury to others, but the only decent thing would be to stop and assist with first aid, call an ambulance etc. To ride away leaving a 9yr old child near to death is utterly despicable. I would say the same if the injury had been caused by a driver. It gives some indication to the seriousness of the offences because it is not being dealt with by the Magistrates Court but will be going to the Crown Court. -- Iain |

I can't see the relevance to a newsgroup that is dedicated to the recreational sport of cycling. Accidents happen. |
