Ride 10% faster!

Campy has now introduced 11 speed cassettes.

Compatible with 10 speed wheels, but requires a narrower chain. The
chain is made from better steel, so it's 20% stronger. To me, this
implies the chains will be 40% more expensive, but I'm old and
cynical.

This sounds like the greatest thing since sliced bread ... in
thinner slices.

Crap! Nightmares do come true.

And people complain about Shimano driving sales with planned
obsolescence! We did not need 10-speed, and sure as hell do not need

are made, the travesty of 10 and 11-speed can be avoided. [1]

How many years until Campagnolo decides that they have to once again
one-up Shimano and SRAM [2] with a 12-speed cassette?

[1] Particularly on a steel frame bicycle that can be modified to have
135-mm dropout spacing to use ATB hubs, which are better sealed anyway.
[2] Who will of course have to come out with their own 11-speed drive
trains to compete for the business of the clueless cyclists who believe
that more is alway better.

Is this being marketed to fans of Spinal Tap? They've always wanted to
be able to turn things up to 11.

Yes, but Shimano moved to 10-speed road components in response to
Campagnolo (SRAM did not have road groups at the time). Again, it is
Campagnolo created planned obsolescence with the introduction of
11-speed road groups. So far, neither Shimano nor SRAM have introduced a
10-speed ATB group. They would be wise not to do so, since while
10-speed may work fine on the road, ATB drive trains see more dirt,
impacts to derailers and shifting under load.

Shimano moving to 9-speed ATB groups did make some sense at the time,
since road and ATB components could be mixed and matched to some extent
on hybrids and touring bicycles.
