Default cages?

Like many, I get nice looking plastic water bottles at organized ride
events. It doesn't take long, however, for that nice looking, memorable
water bottle to look like hell. I know my cheap, shiny, steel cages are
doing it. Does anyone know what kind of cages are available which might not
mess up a nice looking bottle?

Are you sure your cages are steel? Steel doesn't stain waterbottles very
much, though aluminum does. Plastic cages don't stain much either, and can
be bought cheaply (unlike titanium or carbon).

I don't think so. I don't use a bottle cage -- I carry my water
bottles in the milk crate on the back rack, and they get crudded
up, too. And y'know what? The mung that accumulates on the
bottles' outsides is the same stuff that sticks to plastic patio
furnitu auto emissions. Especially diesel soot.

cheers,
Tom

I'll see that and up you one. All the water bottles I can find
seem to be made out of the same cheap plastic and when I take
a drink it doesn't taste like just water. Cages are everywhere
like wal-mart, Target, 2 LBSs near me, etc. Even the auto store
has begun carrying some bike related stuff, tires mostly, but
it's a start. You might try rigging something yourself, and test
your own creativity. Small plastic tubing like that found on
an aquarium air pump or asthma ventilator machine would do it.
Just take a length and slice it (not you, it)down the middle.
Once you have done that it should slip over the metal and
barely be noticeable. If you can handle a razor you've got it made.

Did you ever post a link to a picture of your bike? I keep hearing
about it and I just have to ask. My old Huffy might be a good
platform for a "Fred" contest.

Unfortunately I don't have a camera to even take a picture
of Ol' Pig Iron (yet). Someday. In the meantime, she's a
mid-80's Norco Bigfoot, which is a very "touring" MTB, with
old-school canti brakes, rigid fork, and a very relaxed seat
tubeangle. I believe it's a chromoly frame, but it might as
well be hi-tens. I've got 'er rigged out as a consummate
commuting/utility bike,so she weighs a ton :-) She's already
been involved in a head-on once (I got hit by a corner-cutting
left-turner while waiting for cross-traffic at a stop line), so
I had to replace the fork with one from another bike that was
given to me. But she inexorably lives on. The high seatpost but
short cockpit and backswept riser bar fits me to a tee.

She ain't pretty; she just looks that way. I call her "Ol' Pig
Iron" in public, but when I'm really appreciating her in private,
I call her "Sugarfoot". She always gets me safely home. Except
once. Nobody's perfect.

cheers,
Tom

-------Nalgene bottles are the least "plastic" and they don't seem to get
scuffed so badly.

I have a cage that is injection molded out of plastic, in two halves, which
completely surround the bottle. The whole thing is held together with an
O-ring. Bottle slides in and out easily, and does not get scuffed, since
there are no high pressure points.

A bicycle dealer at the Berkeley Flea Market. It was used, and cost about a
dollar. He may have more--I would be glad to mail you one if you're
interested--postage should be minimal.
