The dog from hell story I need to give them more credit
I am normally a runner who rides a road bike one a week or so for may
20-30 mile ride. Today I get up and do a 7 mile run in 1 hour and then decide to take a nice decent ride in the county on the bike. It was windy from the east so I set out knowing I get good pickup when I turn around. I was about about 11 miles and see two large farms dogs running around the road by I assume, the place they live. I think they may have been yellow labs and seem a decent size. Normally dogs don't bother me if I can past the initial sprint they have I can out run them they usually drop pretty fast. Well I got close and did a U turn back with the wind and they were close but I was quickly well over 20 MPH on the GPS and after maybe 1/2 mile they were toasted. But not so. I turn up another road to continue and sure enough they came up behind and again I took off (side wind) now but now we have gone over 1 mile may close to 1.5 miles. Then I start getting worried these dogs did not give up they just keep at it. I was getting afraid as I was tired and did not want to get stuck since some of the roads turn to gravel and that would be my end on skinny roadbike tires 115psi. Sure enough the T in the road is back into the wind and this was the only hard road so no choice. Now I am at least 2 miles with these dogs still right behind and I was almost ready to give up I was not able to push into the wind that hard. Well I get going and on a slight uphill the dog gets close and I gave it everything to pull away about maybe 18 mph or so. Now I have it beat but I have to turn again to get back and it means going right by the house they seem to be from and they are come up from behind. It was a mile to get back there but of the dogs manages to really get behind again still coming behind me.... it was unreal I have never seen a dog with this much wind we easily had done close to 3 miles. I had one more right turn to get back to the road we started and have the wind at my back but I was afraid the dog might cut the corner and still catch up. I don't like to corner fast I am not that good on a bike. Well I get the corner and then turn it up and for at least another 500 yards at over 25mph the dog was still going but at this point I knew I had him it was all wind at the back. The moral is I was seriously afraid and had I not run earlier it would have been easier to out run them but I am going to respect dogs when I am tired. I have the macho idea I can run those pups into the ground but I have never seen anything like these dogs. I have many times had dogs behind me and maybe for 400 yards the move fast but after that they give up. It took me another 10 minutes to get my self straight and back into riding I was toasted. Anyone had a dog that did this, these pups serious went 3 plus miles of hard running? -- Mark Cleary plays Hollenbeck Jazz Guitars Handmade http://hollenbeckguitar.com/ |

Anyone had a dog that did this, I once had a dog chase me for a few miles. I lost it by crossing a cattle guard. Tom Ace |

I stop for threatening dogs and give them a face full of Halt™ pepper spray. If that fails, I carry a collapsible steel baton that can fracture bones. On the other hand, we had a friendly lab-retriever mix run with our group for a long distance. We stopped at a convenience store, and had someone restrain the dog while we rode off. -- Tom Sherman - 42.435731,-83.985007 LOCAL CACTUS EATS CYCLIST - datakoll |

Sort out some sort of weapon always to hand when nearing this area. |

More seriously, if these dogs are such a menace, you would do well to call or write to the authories in the town in which they live. I don't encounter dogs in the road much where I ride -- most are chained or behind fences, but in general if a dog actually scare me I don't run/ride away - I stare the dog down and move away slowly. Or yell at the dog suddenly and angrily. But that's just one dog. Groups of dogs worry me more and I don't know how to deal with that. |

Sounds like great interval training!
My tiny 7 lb. Yorkshire Terrier, "Lucky" easily did 5 miles with me when I was skate skiing a couple winters ago. Not quite as fast as biking perhaps but he's a super athlete in my book. His legs are barely 6 inches long! |

Open question how shared long distance hunting strategies affected the evolution of both species. |
