I've only ever driven manual cars with the exception of one automatic that also had hand controls - I found the hand controls easier to use than the pedals because my left foot kept trying to use the brake as a clutch. I expect I could unlearn this behaviour given time, if I had to, but in the meantime it's actually easier for me to handle the gears and clutch myself. The opposite can happen. Recently I had to drive my parents manual car. I tried to start the engine with it in gear, fortunately it wouldn't let me until it was in neutral with the clutch down. |

And I have a bicycle with sequential shift so why do cars still have antique technology? My car has a toppy vvt petrol engine, so is inherently rather gutless, hence my reason for going auto was less for ease in traffic than to get kickdown on the move. I wanted to approximate the response of a turbo engine by reducing the time from the initial thought of picking up speed to actually picking up speed (amazing how long it takes to downshift a manual). The lack of clutch also allows my wife to put the seat a couple of inches further back. Like ABS (used under stress once in 20 years), it reduces workload - command the car, not control it. I don't understand the notion some people have that automatic takes something away. |

Even an older 4sp only suffered over lots of short journeys when the TC spent a lot of time unlocked to span the wide gear spacing. Most drivers will not beat a modern 6+, whether it has a TC or DC. However, having driven both, I think that Auto is ideal for city cars, and manual for longer distance cruising. In mine the final drive is slightly taller than the manual. That's better in my book. My next car is likely to be a manual hybrid. It's another way to take the edge off a tall final drive. |

That'll be why there are so many haulage companies using autobox trucks. Yes fuel economy CAN be better with a superlatively driven manual versus autobox but with only 95% of concentration there is nothing in it, after about ten minutes and concentration down to about 90% autoboxes have the best fuel economy. However, having driven both, I think that Auto is ideal for city cars, and manual for longer distance cruising. My next car is likely to be a manual hybrid. Do manual hybrids even exist |

It used to be so, but nowadays an auto gearbox can beat maunal ones. The Mazda3i and Fiesta 1.6 are reported to do so, and I know the Fiat "Comfortmatic" version of auto for motorhomes gets an impressive 25mpg when towing. Perhaps you were 'away' from the motoring scene during the time these improvements became available to the public. |
