Causeway installed over 80 foot long bog on Keyauwee...Uwharrie National Forest...South Central NC
Causeway Installed on Keyauwee Mountain Bike Trail in the Uwharrie National
Forest On May 14, 2004 members of the Uwharrie Wheelmen and the Uwharrie Mountain Bike Association installed a gravel causeway over a 75-foot long rooty bog at the beginning of Keyauwee Mountain Bike Trail. The project took approximately 10 tons of gravel to complete. The area was flagged and a retaining wall was put in place. Gravel was moved from Woodrun Hunt Camp by wheelbarrow. Trail conditions on Keyauwee and Supertree trails are good. The gravel causeway fixed the number one problem in the Woodrun Mountain Bike Trail System. This was the third Trail Care Day since March. The other two workdays fixed major drainage problems on Supertree and Keyauwee trails. Although there is still work to be done, most major drainage problems have been fixed. The trails are clear, dry, and fast. A USDA Forest Service/ Uwharrie National Forest supervisor visited to see the result. The USDA Forest Service supported the effort by approving the modification to the trail. We value their support! The Sandhills Cycling Club paid for the gravel. The Uwharrie Mountain Bike Association and the Uwharrie Wheelmen organized the trail care day, which was supported by the Sandhills Cycling Club, Tarheel Trailblazers of Charlotte, the Yadkin-Pee Dee Lakes Project and the Pfeiffer University Outdoor Programs. Mountain bikers from Kentucky, Charlotte, Monroe, Winston Salem, Albemarle, Montgomery County, Charlotte, Asheboro, Marshville, and Greensboro were on hand to inspect and try out the new section. They all agreed that the gravel causeway was a plus. For more information, go to www.rideumba.com or www.uwharriewheelmen.org Join us if you are interested in improving or building mountain bike trails. Coming Events June 19: No Workday...We are planning a ride at 9 AM followed by a picnic at Woodrun Hunt Camp. July 17: Trail Care Day August 21: Trail Care Day September 18: Trail Care Day |
