There may be hope
When I was an auxilliary fireman, I got into the habit of listening to a radio scanner so that I'd know when to shut down the computer to clear the line for an incoming call, then run upstairs and put on leaving-the-house clothes. An astounding number of auxiliaries went to fires in indoor clothing, then complained of freezing. I never gave up the habit -- I like to know what the road conditions are, and the maintenance people at Grace let me know whether the sidewalks are safe. Last night I heard something rather nice. Some driver wanted the police to check the welfare of a fellow dressed all in black riding an unlit bike on a major road. It's "danger! danger!", but this time it's something that actually is dangerous. A pleasant change from "to keep you safe, I'm going to tie you to the railroad track." -- Joy Beeson joy beeson at comcast dot net http://wlweather.net/PAGEJOY/ |

I agree, there certainly are ways that riding can be dangerous. Night riding with no lights is certainly one, whether the clothing is black or white. Another is riding facing traffic, especially at night. I've called local cops about that one. -- - Frank Krygowski |

How exactly do you report that one? that situation happened like this: I was driving out of town on the main highway. My wife was with me. It was night, but less than an hour after sunset. There was still a little light in the western sky. A woman was riding toward us on the wrong side of the road. As we got closer, she shifted from the wrong-side gutter to the center of the highway, probably because I was in my right lane. After I passed, I saw in my rear view mirror that she had moved back to the gutter. I pulled over at the first opportunity (within a minute or so) and called the town cops. I just said she was riding wrong way with no lights, that it was very dangerous, and I hoped someone would stop her. The dispatcher said she'd notify a patrolman. I don't know what, if anything, happened after that. (The bike rider apparently didn't crash or I'd have heard about it.) -- - Frank Krygowski |
