Darren York, 43, former Indio Planning Commissioner and son of Indio
pioneers Doug and Linda York, died Sunday in Mountain Center while
engaging in one of his favorite past-times - mountain-biking.
An adventurer who worked hard and played hard, Darren York, was biking
with friends along the Hurkey Creek Trail when he either passed out,
fainted or had some type of heart trouble, said Lorraine York, his
high school sweetheart and wife of 23 years.

"He's just a very loving and giving person. Darren was always one to
stop and help others," she said Tuesday.

Darren York was president and owner of Meredith & Simpson Construction
Co., an Indio-based family business, which notably built the huge
Mathis Brothers Furniture store on Highway 111 in Indio.

"He was one of the most honest young guys. His integrity was very
important to him," said Del Francis, owner of World Fire Protection, a
fire sprinkler contractor that has done business with the York family
for over 25 years.

Darren York started helping out with the family business when he was 9
years old, said Lorraine, and eventually took over the company from
his father, Doug York.

A lover of the outdoors, Darren York was also an off-road racer,
racing trucks and cars, and loved to snow ski and water ski.

He served on the Indio Planning Commission in 2003 and 2004.

"He taught us so much," said Lorraine York.

"He touched a lot of people's lives. The most important thing to
Darren was (me) and his three daughter. He lived for us and supported
us in whatever we wanted to do," she said.
Darren York is survived by his parents, Doug and Linda York; his
sister, Deborah Eby; his wife, Lorraine; and three daughters Deanna,
20, Danae, 18 and Deidre, 15.

Biking was a family affair for the Yorks, Darren York often traied on
the Bump-and-Grind trail with his daughters, all whom have competed in
mountain bike races.

Danae is a member of the United States Mountain biking team.

"We all ride bikes together," said Lorraine.

FitzHenry Funeral Homes is arranging funeral services.

It certainly is, you taking the death of a human and twisting it to fit
your myopic bigoted views. Do the world a favor mikey and go get laid or
something.

Google "hiker deaths" = 715,000 hits

http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...q=hiker+deaths

Shall I go pick out an article -- post it on a hiking NG -- and celebrate
the named hiker's demise before his or her family has even made burial
arrangements?

You're sick, deranged and despicable. HAND.

His wife's nether regions are a wildlife habitat that is off-limits to
humans ("pure habitat").

You're despicable.

The guy had health problems, he could have passed out at the mall.

You REALLY need to get a life.

Again with death to support your OPINION? Again posting without comparative
reference? Again with no comparison to validate? Please explain why your
post of a death involving cycling reflects on the general activity in
comparison to the death involving hiking reflecting the general activity.

N.J. Hiking Death
Man Says Brother Was Denied Water On Extreme Hike
(AP) SALT LAKE CITY A New Jersey man who died last week after a lengthy hike
in Utah's red rock country, while enrolled in a survival school, was denied
water in extreme heat, says his brother.

D*** B*****, 29, of R*******, N.J., died in the rugged Cottonwood Wash area
east of Boulder, Utah. It was the first day of a 28-day survival course
offered by Colorado-based Boulder Outdoor Survival School.

The group of 12 students and three instructors left a water source at 9 a.m.
last Sunday and hiked all day in high temperatures without additional water.
The group was several hundred yards from water when D*** B***** passed out
and died around 7:30 that evening.

He died in the company of his FRIENDS, doing an activity that he enjoyed
with his FRIENDS. In all probability he will be GREATLY missed by his
FAMILY and FRIENDS. Will Mikey be missed by anyone or will anyone CARE
someday when he dies?

Yes, by millions of mountain bikers, who won't have anyone to blame
anymore.
