Default 9 speed derailer with 10 speed???

I know the folks at Shimano say you ened a full 10 speed group for the shifting to function, but is it possible to use a 9 speed derailler?? I'm looking to keep all my bikes consistent and I want to update my rain bike to 10 speed. Being that this is my rain bike, I'd like to do this as cheaply as possible. I remember that this worked when switching from 8 to 9 speed.

Has anyone tried it? What about chainrings? I'd like to just change shifters, cogs, and chain. Will it work?

With Shimano, yes.

You'll need the 10s cassette and the matching shifter, and that's all.

Yes, The front sprockets will not be a problem. The narrower 10s
chain may cause you to have to slightly overshift on the front once in
a while to get quick changes, but that's the only potential downside.

You haven't found that a narrower chain is necessary for most 9-speed
chains? The PC-89R is about as narrow as the Wip10, so technically a
9-speed chain could work.

The OP mentioned swapping the chain, and I simply missed listing it.
OTOH, given that one of the guys I've talked to about this recently
swapped up to a 10s setup while retaining his old 9s chain with no
reported problems, it appears that there are some 9s chains that will
indeed work on a 10s Shimano cassette. Others have reported that it
didn't work, so YMMV is definitely a factor. Adding a 10s chain to
the necessities list is a safe bet; it may be required, and the worst
that will happen is that a backup of an expendable item will be left
over if the existing 9s chain works.
