Default Thanksgiving Day TurkeyTrot ride to Pescadero/Tunitas

For those interested in a ride to the coast on Thursday morning, we'll be
having our annual TurkeyTrot ride leaving from Olive Hill & Canada Road
(where our regular Tuesday/Thursday-morning ride starts) at 8am. This is
approximately one mile north of Woodside; some parking is available on a
cul-de-sac off Olive Hill, but there's also a Park & Ride on Woodside Road
just west of 280. It would take about 10 minutes to ride from there to the
start, or you could meet us at Roberts (Canada & Woodside Road) at about
8:05 as we roll through.

The plan is to head south through Woodside, Mtn Home to Portola Road, then
up Old LaHonda, down the other side to LaHonda, and over Haskins Grade to
Pescadero. *IF* the bakery's open we'll have a mandatory stop there;
otherwise, we'll do a quick regroup and then head north on Stage Road to San
Gregorio, where the General Store will be open for food. After than it's
further north on Stage Road to Highway 1 and then up Tunitas Creek and back
down to Woodside.

The ride will leave promptly at 8am. Those who wish to meet at the base of
Old LaHonda should be there by 8:10, and if you need extra time to get to
the top, plan on being there (at the top) no later than 8:35am.

We need to be back at the start by 1pm, so this ride won't be a good choice
for someone's first trip out to the coast. In general, if you can make it up
Old LaHonda in about 25 minutes or so (or Kings Mtn in 35 minutes), you'll
likely be fine.

There is *no* support on this ride, so it's up to you to bring enough
clothing to be warm (it could be cold & foggy on the coast), food & water.
Two water bottles should be plenty, as you can refill in Pescadero. For
food, you need to assume that the first opportunity won't be until San
Gregorio, so bring something along so you won't run out of gas. 2 or 3
powerbars should do fine.

Ride length will be around 55 miles, with about 5500 feet of climbing.
Points of interest along the way include the face carvings on west-side Old
LaHonda, Flamingo House prior to Pescadero, and the Machine-gun man & woman
sculptures on Stage Road.

Hope to see you on the road-

A beautiful day, a bit on the cool side, but very clear. Must have been a
great view at the top of Mt Hamilton for those who did the Hill Climb!

Mike, how did you make that route map (i.e., how did you get Google Maps to
follow your route)?

Nice collection of typical scenes. I crossed that path later in the
day and was amazed how cool it was in spite of sunshine and no wind.
I took a shorter course but La Honda was chilly.

Next time you get down to Pescadero note that there are two cemeteries
on that site, Catholic and Protestant, St. Andrew's and Mt. Hope.

I hope your ride was good at generating an appetite for the fat bird
later on.

It must have been a great view. The web cam from the top of Hamilton looked
great. It was the weather station that made me wimp out. Was suppose to
head up about 7:30 am. A quick check of the weather station showed winds in
the 30 mph range, temps in the 30s and wind chill at 25. Wasn't the climb
that bother me, it is the descent. Been there and done that a couple of
times. Not ready yet to put the thermal base layer on. Hate to stop the
bike on the way down so I can stop shaking.

Jobst, how come your newsreader doesn't quote url's? It's hard to tell if
you or the person you're quoting posted the url.

I cheat. I've got a Garmin Edge 305. Makes it easy!

....and why do you care where it came from, it's what people write
about the stuff that is being discussed. The pictures only enhance
the text. As in this response, I am responding to which is the name
at the top and that person is responding to . I suppose you were
mystified whose pictures these were. It seems the citation tree is
still a mystery to some on this newsgroup.

I'm sure the secret agent will fess up if you ask who took the pictures.
