Hey Tim, since you lost your empire and have become a second rate nation,
it
no longer matters how the Brits do anything anymore. We Americans are now
in
the driver's seat since we are the only super power left in the world.

You Brits needed to win your wars better. I would not have minded at all
living in the age of Queen Victoria, but I will take a pass on your
present
reduced circumstances. If you want to dictate anything to anyone
respecting
the English language, come to America and forsake lowly Britain (no
longer
Great).

The issue isn't necessarily the spelling of the names of the
elements being "right" or "wrong" because that's how it's done in the
UK. The correct/ official spellings are aluminium and sulfur because the
International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) say so.

Maybe so, but in the end it will be how intelligent and educated Americans
say it and write it. IUPAC will have no more to say about it than does the
French Academy about how the French language is used.

But only in connection with a particular thread that is all about me.

You can qualify it all you want. Bottom line is you aren't going anywhere.

GREAT Saints like myself are all about passing judgment on sinners. If I
don't do it, who will?

There is no shortage of people doing this job Ed. But they are not saints
any more than you are.

I define words to suit me, not others. But I always elaborate and explain
what I mean so that others can take it or leave it. You do not like my
use of the word saint, but I have told you what I mean by it. What could
be fairer than that?

Using it the way most of us use it would be much fairer. I could say that
when I use the term "**** You", what I really mean is "Go with God and may
peace be upon you". Having said this, are you going to be comfortable with
my saying "**** You" over and over? No you won't because you realize that
"**** You" already has a meaning that is understood no matter what Jeff
Grippe says it means. The same is true of the word "Saint". It does not
mean what Ed Dolan says it means even if Ed Dolan has told us what he
means when he uses it. Just because you call yourself a saint doesn't mean
you are one. If you persist in calling yourself a saint it might mean that
you are seriously deluded. It might mean that you are witty and clever
with words. It might mean that you don't actually know what a saint is.
But it will never make you a saint.

There are narrow definitions of words and there are broad definitions of
words. If you have been reading what I have been writing at all well, you
would know by now that I go with the broad definitions of words. When I tell
you what I mean by a word, then that is what I mean and I shall continue to
use it anyway I please and everyone in the world will get my meaning except
purposely obtuse types like you. All words have associations. It is those
associations that I mean to point to when I use words broadly.

A saint as defined by the Roman Catholic Church is not what I mean at all.
It is absurd for anyone to have ever thought that. What you object to is my
holier than thou attitude and that is precisely what I mean to convey to
this freaking newsgroup, most especially to you.

The word saint represents a superior platform from which to judge others.
I am assuming a moral position which has been hallowed by the ages.
Anyone who says "if it moves **** it" is automatically judged and
condemned by words out of his own mouth. I always assume a position of
high virtue. Those who assume any other position can try to defend it,
but they will have me to contend with. We Great Saints are here to plague
lowly sinners.

Once again you are using words in a way that is inconsistent with the way
most of us use them. Most of us, for example, know a joke when we hear one
and don't pretend that it is a statement of policy. What the crazy person
considers virtuous, isn't. You are not the barometer of morals. You aren't
even close. Sorry to be so blunt but you are often rude, insulting, and
vulgar. These are not behaviors of the morally superior or virtuous.

I will match my morality against yours any day of the week and twice on
Sunday. I think the whole world knows that New York secular smart ass Jews
are not known for their morality. Woody Allen anyone?

Bottom line, I am holier than thou. As Johnny ReBike (Ed Gin) would say -
deal with it!

Um, not exactly. There are correct definitions and there are incorrect ones.
The ones that Ed Dolan may or may not be correct but a dictionary could
resolve the issue.

A saint as defined by the Roman Catholic Church is not what I mean at all.

But it is the Roman Catholic Church that defines the word. You also use
other "Roman Catholic" like language such as "Order of the Perpetual
Sorrows" in your signature line. Why should we think that you don't have
some version of the Roman Catholic (correct) definition? Because you tell us
so? That just makes you ignorant which is really ok with me.

What you object to is my holier than thou attitude

I used to object to it. I now find it entertaining. I guess there's no
accounting for taste.

I will match my morality against yours any day of the week and twice on
Sunday.

I don't play "matching morality". I let my actions speak for themselves. I
certainly don't let your characterization of me speak for me. Anyway I can't
play with you on Sunday even once because I have a prior engagement teaching
Sunday School (I kid you not!)

Bottom line, I am holier than thou.

Ok, you are holier than me. Put your "Holier than Jeff Grippe" Award right
up there on your trophy next to your "Most Prolific Poster" Award.

Jeff

PS

I'm glad I don't get the last word. I look forward to your next installment.
Keep that Crusade going Ed.

Who says I need a purpose?

I cannot take anyone seriously on the issue of morality who believes it is

That is because your moral compass is poorly calibrated. You can't stop
abortion. All you can do is decide if it is available only to the wealthy or
if it is available to people of modest means as well.

Your ethics are based on a level of human behavior that human beings are not
capable of. That being the case you must balance social issues with the
absolute moral stand.

You have no claim to your "holier than thou" attitude. You support killing
in the contexts where it fits your vision of what should be. You have called
for the destruction of Islamic people, the dropping of an atomic weapon on
France so that they would "wake up" (in your words). You have shown strong
support for the current war. Guess what Ed, innocent Americans have died in
that war by the thousands.

You may reply with some arguement about numbers but if you really believe
that killing is wrong the one is too many and your arguement about the
comparitive number of deaths is a social one and not a moral one.

I make sure I not only get the last world, but also the best word.

That is for others to judge. You can put your "best word" trophy right up
there next to your "most prolific poster" and "holier than Jeff Grippe"
trophies. You should go out and get a trophy case. You are accumulating
quite a list of accolades. I'm proud of you Ed.

I would have thought your purpose in being here was to receive intellectual
stimulation from me. We all know how dull and boring New York City can be.

I cannot take anyone seriously on the issue of morality who believes it
is just fine and dandy to commit abortion.

There are certain human behaviors which ought to be hidden away in a closet.
Abortion is one of them. Homosexuality is another one. The list just goes
one and on. But moronic liberals like you want to bring these reprehensible
human behaviors out in the open and justify them on the basis of class
discrimination or some other superfluous issue.

Poor people have always been trash people and we should never do anything to
encourage their trash behavior. Only the middle class is moral. The upper
classes also behave like swine. I give you the Kennedy's as an example of
what I am talking about.

Hypocrisy is the tribute that vice pays to virtue. But when you do not set
virtue up as the standard you have abandoned all goodness. The lowest common
denominator will then prevail which is pretty much what has happened in
America today.

You have no claim to your "holier than thou" attitude. You support killing
in the contexts where it fits your vision of what should be. You have

The Iraq War is one of the most moral wars ever entered into by the US.
Vietnam was another moral war. It is wars such as these that make me proud
to be an American.

You may reply with some arguement about numbers but if you really believe
that killing is wrong the one is too many and your arguement about the
comparitive number of deaths is a social one and not a moral one.

People die everyday for totally senseless reasons. I believe there may be
more Americans dying on the streets of Washington DC from criminal activity
then there are Americans dying in Iraq. Anyone who is dying in the cause of
war on behalf of the US is a hero and a saint. Wars are how you rid the
world of intractable evil - provided you win them of course.

I make sure I not only get the last word, but also the best word.

Your liberalism condemns you. I encourage you to have a closer look at
conservatism and how it has functioned down through history. There is
something to be said even for the divine right of kings.

Jim wants to get into this conversation on morality and who deserves it and
who doesn't. From his above statement, I cannot figure out if he favors
abortion or if he is against it. Maybe he could clarify his position for the
benefit of the group. We need to know.

You can tell an awful lot about a person depending on the issue of abortion.
It goes to all other kinds of social and moral issues. For instance, those
who think abortion is OK also invariably think homosexuality is also OK. Why
is that I wonder?

I never mentioned abortion. All I said is they should have castrated
your father before your conception. No abortion in play.

Betting you're nat man enough to just walk away, eddieboy.
