POLICE stopped cyclists in a pedestrian-only shopping centre after
complaints from residents and businesses.

They stopped cyclists in the Bury Street precinct, Abingdon, and
warned of the danger to shoppers.

Sgt Kev Hickman said the issue had been raised by the Neighbourhood
Action Group, a police-run group where residents can discuss
concerns.
....
“And with all the street furniture, cyclists like to weave around,
which can be hazard. They are quite a menace.”
....
Chairman of Vale Disability Access Mike Moon said two disabled people
had been knocked over by cyclists.

He said: “It makes people feel rather angry, intimidated and very
unsafe.”
....

Don't the reliase that the cyclist are only endangering pedestrians
because they feel unsafe on the roads?

I bet the disabled person stepped straight in front of the cyclist
(and then did it again)

Latest figures from DfT: KSI per billion passenger kilometres:

Van: 5 people
Bus/Coach: 9 people
Car : 18 people
Pedestrians: 358 people

Oh : and of course cyclists:
Cyclists: 541 people

Of those four modes of transport - which is the most dangerous?

(With thanks to Justin Lewis for asking me to find out the figures)

No, they're endangering pedestrians, if at all, because they are riding
with insufficient care.

They're riding through the precinct because they feel unsafe, or because
the route is unnecessarily circuitous, on the roads. It is perfectly
possible to ride through a shopping precinct without endangering anyone. I
doubt if the police were attempting to make the distinction.

No-one has ever proved that cycle helmets make cycling any safer at the
population level, and anyway cycling is about as safe per mile as walking.

It is also possible to drive home late at night after consuming six pints
without endangering anyone (more people must do it then get caught for it).

But the police don't make that distinction either. Let's see if we can work
out why.

They are riding through a pedestrian precinct because they could not give a
****.
You know that and I know that.

Pity they don't also warn motorists on pavements, who are sometimes
but not always allowed there by law to the inconvenience and danger of
many.
