1 ) what size allen key is needed to remove cranks ?

2) how the hell do you remove the bottom of a headset from a frame?

i'm sure lots more stupid questions will follow

1) It depends on the crankset. The most common is 8mm.

2) Take it to a reputable LBS and have them do it, unless you have a
headset removal tool.

As the crankset goes, removing that bolt won't necessarily do it alone.
Again, depends on the crank You may need a crank extractor too.

Swapping frames?

have the extractor already, yeah, its coming off one bike, and going onto
another

God knows, the big one that fits nothing else.

You 'need' a tool that looks like a 1 1/8th pipe with a split down the
middle, it hooks the cup and you bash it out with a hammer. However, the
alternative way is to use a hammer and punch. You'll probably wreck the cups
but if you're taking the cups out, you're most likely putting a new headset
in anyway.
